Summit Hose Fall Festival gearing up for 3 days of food, fun, bingo and bands
It’s three weeks until the official start of autumn, but that’s close enough for Summit Hose Company to stage its popular Fall Festival in Tarentum’s Riverview Memorial Park.
The carnival, scheduled for Sept. 7-9, is expected to draw thousands of people of all ages.
“There will be rides and games, and we’ll sell food at the Snack Shack,” said Larry Altman, longtime department member.
“Summit Hose members take pride in providing the local residents an opportunity to share time with friends and family.”
Admission is free.
Founded in 1906, Summit Hose is one of three departments that serve the borough. The carnival dates to the 1970s in West Tarentum, with many people recalling the fair as a yearly staple in the borough.
It was 12 years ago that the fire company decided to add bands and craft booths to the event and move it to the riverfront park.
The carnival draws large crowds of people for the variety of crafters, nightly bingo and a lineup of live entertainment, Altman said.
Taking the stage this year are oldies band American Pie on Sept. 7; rock group 56 East on Sept. 8; and dance music from Lenny Collini on Sept. 9.
Musicians play from 7 to 10 p.m.
“They’re all popular,” said Matt Hensel, a volunteer for 39 years. “People will like them for sure.”
The event is one of the company’s most significant fundraisers, members said.
Hensel said proceeds go back into the general operating fund to help pay day-to-day expenses.
“It’s just a nice way to help Tarentum out to have something for the community,” he said.
It’s a year-‘round effort for organizers, who will shift into high gear this week buying food and nailing down details.
Fire company members will dish up favorites from the food booth, including pizza, fries, hot sausage, chicken tenders and kielbasi.
Vendors will sell items varying from home decor and wreaths to jewelry and trinkets. This year, a Native American craftsman will sell handmade items, Altman said.
