Syria Shriners' 3rd annual free summer concert series keeps rolling along
During 2020 when people stayed indoors to occupy their time, Bob Addleman wanted to give the community a fun environment outside while still being safe.
Addleman, who serves as recorder, secretary and business manager for the Pittsburgh’s Syria Shriners, would find the perfect opportunity by using the Pittsburgh Shrine Center’s pavilion in Harmar to host concerts.
Addleman is no stranger to organizing concerts, as he has produced them for 40 years.
“I wanted to give people something to do and local bands an opportunity to have a gig because jobs were scarce for musicians,” he said.
The idea of holding weekly concerts came to life with Miller Lite Thunder Thursdays Summer Music Series. The concert series gives a stage to local musicians every Thursday through Oct. 13. This is the third year hosting the concerts, Addleman said.
While the concert series is free, Addleman said the organization accepts donations to help offset expenses.
Cheswick Councilman George White works alongside Addleman as concert coordinator. He said they always are looking for ways to bring good stuff to the community.
“It is really remarkable what happens there,” White said. “The people are outstanding.”
The series is free to attend, and free parking is available at the center. Gates open at 6 p.m. and the concert starts at 7. Food and vendors will be available at the event. No tailgating or outside food or beverages are allowed.
Addleman said an average of 250 people attended concerts last year, with the highest attendance being 400. He said the turnout so far this season has been low because of the weather.
“Our attendance is down from last year’s average, but it is early,” he said. “We are expecting a good crowd on Thursday. A way for people to get a head start on their holiday weekend.”
