Author Annie Kayser of Springdale took more than two decades to pen her first novel, and now she can’t wait to celebrate it.

“Out of the Ashes” is a 500-plus-page book that details a journey of self-fulfillment. Kayser’s first effort in writing, released in October, spanned 26 years as she grieved a friend’s death from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, was a working mom and paved her path in life.

“I couldn’t quit my day job,” Kayser said, laughing. “My mother was a huge reader and she instilled that in me. Writing is something I always dreamed about.”

Kayser will be among a dozen writers in Tarentum on Saturday for a holiday book and author event at Central Presbyterian Church.

Hosted by borough-based Word Association Publishers, the event kicks off at 3 p.m.

Admission and parking are free.

As a backdrop, pianist Ron Bickel will play songs of the season, Broadway favorites and pop tunes, while Harvest Moon Coffee & Chocolates will sell confections.

Francine Costello, owner of Word Association, said it’s a perfect way to mark the achievements of local authors and provide a haven for book lovers to peruse a variety of genres.

There will be children’s books, mystery, memoir, history, poetry and more.

It enables small group settings for writing enthusiasts to ask questions from published authors, she said.

Other local authors featured Saturday include Thelma Greco of New Kensington, who wrote “How to Hire a Star,” and George Guido of Lower Burrell with “Alle-Kiski Valley Sports History.”

David Rankin, church administrator, said Central Presbyterian is the perfect setting for the event. He believes partnerships like this are what helps Tarentum thrive.

“The borough is full of great businesses and great people,” Rankin said. “Our hope is that by promoting events like this and working together, Tarentum and other nearby communities will see what we have to offer.”

He believes the church can play a role in furthering community growth.

“Our cooperation is important. We have the space here to host events like this and are happy to share it with the community,” Rankin said. “We’d actually like to host similar events and help serve the community as a catalyst for renewal.”

Greco has been studying the psychology of personalities for 20 years.

Her second book, “How to Hire a Star,” features the world’s shortest personality quiz.

“It’s an easy-to-read guide on how to hire employees,” Greco said.

She looks forward to Saturday’s event as a way to connect with the community.

Kayser, an aquatic exercise teacher for Fox Chapel Area Adult Education, said what’s special about the book fair is the diversity of authors.

“All the books we have to offer are so varied. You’re not walking into a whole room full of mysteries or memoirs. I believe this is great for getting people into Tarentum and giving a boost not only to the authors but to the community.”
