An effort by Tarentum to upgrade its failing water system has gotten a boost.

The borough was awarded $200,000 in federal grants for upgrades to the water treatment plant and pump house, much of which is nearly 100 years old and considered a maintenance nightmare.

“This project is another major step forward in our multiyear effort to upgrade and strengthen Tarentum’s water system,” Manager Dwight Boddorf said.

The grant will be used to install smart variable-speed pumps to improve energy efficiency and flow control; replace aging lines and reduce water loss; and modernize outdated mechanical and electrical systems.

Boddorf said major water system upgrades require multiple years of layered funding. A 20-year pipe replacement plan is underway, along with other work to bring the facility and distribution system up to date.

“By continuing to pursue grant opportunities aggressively, we reduce the financial burden on our residents,” he said.

The total cost is expected to be in the tens of millions of dollars.
