Tarentum Mayor Eric Carter has resigned from his position.

Council President Scott Dadowski read a resignation letter from Carter, whose first term was scheduled to end Dec. 31.

In the letter, Carter cited scheduling conflicts.

“Over the past several months, my personal and work schedules have caused a dramatic change in my ability to continue to serve as Mayor,” Carter wrote. “I will not be able to attend many meetings through the remainder of the year, as meetings are part of the job as mayor. I feel if I cannot attend the meetings, I will not be fulfilling my obligation to the borough.”

Carter thanked the current and past councils for “a great 16 years,” referring to his overall tenure in office as the mayor and a councilman. He also thanked the borough’s residents for their support of him throughout his tenure.

Dadowski said council would defer taking action on Carter’s resignation. He noted council has 45 days in which to act on the letter.

Dadowski thanked Carter for his service.

Carter began his public service in 2006 when he was appointed to a council vacancy in the 2nd Ward. He was elected to the seat in 2007 and then for two subsequent terms.

Carter, the grandson of beloved longtime Mayor James Wolfe, challenged Carl Magnetta three times for the mayor’s position. Magnetta was appointed to Wolfe’s unexpired term when Wolfe died in 2009.

Carter lost in two Democratic primaries before winning the third primary and then the general election in 2017 when Magnetta was able to get enough Republican write-in votes to run in the fall. Magnetta died in 2018.

However, Carter came in third in a three-candidate race during last May’s Democratic primary. He was defeated by Councilwoman Carrie Fox, who is Magnetta’s daughter.
