Helping people live a healthier life is the driving force behind a new health fair in Tarentum.

The Tarentum Recreation Board is holding the fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Carl J. Magnetta Jr. Memorial Amphitheater in Riverview Memorial Park.

“Health fairs serve a lot of purposes, the most important is it’s a community event and volunteers are donating their time to help the community live a healthier life,” said Carrie Fox, a Tarentum councilwoman and president of the recreation board.

Everything at the fair will be free, Fox said. Food will be available for sale at the snack shack.

The fair will include two presentations. Dr. Suzanne Labriola will discuss advanced care planning starting at 12:30 p.m., while Ashley Clark will cover the Mediterranean diet beginning at 2:30 p.m.

There will be information booths on living with chronic disease, blood pressure, diabetes, colorectal cancer, holistic health and fitness.

“Hopefully, it starts a conversation among people about issues and concern in their own health and maybe a family member’s health,” she said. “I’d like people to come and listen to the information — you never know who you can help.”

Events for children will include a story time starting at 11:30 a.m. and face painting.

The health fair could become an annual event, Fox said.

“We’re going to see how it goes,” she said. “It’s a lot of work, but I hope it pays off for the community.”
