A long-awaited sanitary sewer project is finally underway in Tarentum.
Work at Seventh Avenue and Ormond Street includes new lines as part of a Department of Environmental Protection mandate to separate storm sewers to ease runoff. It also will divert water from a nearby spring.
Managed by the Allegheny Valley North Council of Governments, work has been eyed by the borough for several years.
The nearly $400,000 project is being paid for with the help of federal Community Development Block Grants secured by Allegheny County Economic Development, according to Robert Frank, the council of governments’ executive director.
The borough was awarded a nearly $291,000 Community Development Block Grant along with $100,000 through the state Gaming Economic Development and Tourism Fund.
Engineering and some soft costs will be paid by the borough.
Export-based Kukurin Contracting was awarded the contract.
Work will include excavating under the railroad tracks to connect to a line on Bridge Street.
