Tarentum water line break affects several parts of borough

A break in a 12-inch water line Friday afternoon affected service in several parts of Tarentum, borough Manager Michael Nestico said.

The break happened around 2 p.m. on Larusse Boulevard, he said. There was no identified cause for the break in the old, high-pressure line.

The break was causing homes and businesses to get discolored water and low pressure.

“Because it is a 12-inch line, and is one of the more important ones within the system, the break caused a great deal of water loss throughout the system,” Nestico said. “It also caused a lot of water to rapidly flow through the system. For that reason, it can sometimes stir up sediment, rust, etc., that would otherwise not be disturbed.”

Nestico said crews had isolated the break and only a few properties were without water service shortly after 3 p.m.

Areas with low water pressure should start seeing it build back up.

Anyone with discolored water should run their faucet for a brief period to clear the lines, Nestico said.
