A Fox Chapel couple has opened a new business at the former Oakmont Bakery location along Allegheny Avenue.
The Juicery at Oakmont has replaced Rev22 Salud Juice and Wellness Bar.
The new smoothie and shake shop had a soft opening in November after some renovations and adding a new menu.
A grand opening celebration has yet to take place.
“So far we’ve been paying the bills, but we haven’t really ramped anything up yet,” said Kevin Pawlowicz, co-owner with his wife, Marybeth. “We’re still tweaking the menu. We’re still working some things out. We’re going to be adding some other things beyond just juice and smoothies as we’re moving along.”
One of the changes from the former establishment was the addition of a cold press juicer.
Pawlowicz, 54, said cold pressing helps preserve enzymes and nutrients. He said it delivers a higher potency that lasts about five days compared to a few hours with other juicing methods.
“Any time you’re heating up vegetables or heating up anything, they start to break down, and raw is always better than cooked,” he said. “The amount of nutrients that we’re getting in our raw, cold-press juices is pretty much like getting romaine right out of the field. It tastes better, healthier, fresher. We’re able to get pounds of produce in a 16-ounce bottle.”
Pawlowicz, head of Fox Chapel Advanced Dental Care, got into juicing about seven years ago while searching for a way to improve his health.
He said he was inspired after watching the documentary “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead.”
It follows the 60-day journey of Australian Joe Cross as he navigates his way across the United States on a juice fast to regain his health under the direction of Nutritional Research Foundation director Joel Furhman.
Pawlowicz did his own juice cleanse, began feeling better and never looked back.
“Ever since then, I’ve been hooked on juicing and just want to find a way to get it to everybody,” he said.
The Pawlowiczs have been married for about seven years. They plan to open a juicery and wellness center in the summer in the Fox Chapel area, along Freeport Road.
They acquired the Oakmont business in August from Oakmont resident Lori Hummel and her family.
Hummel said she is happy to see her old store breathe new life.
“We did do a great job and it was really busy and people loved it, but we simply could not get employees,” Hummel said.
Manager Laura Veihdeffer of Mt. Washington said she has known the Pawlowiczs for a few years, and jumped at the chance to run the business.
“When this place kind of popped into the picture we were all very excited,” she said. “I know it was already set up as a juicery/smoothie place. We tried to keep some things the same. It seems like a great location for it, and everyone seemed to be missing the old Salud. We are a new franchise, but we are independently owned and are still catering to what the community likes.”
One menu item that was added by popular demand is the acai bowls. They come in various styles with 100 grams of unsweetened acai pulp in every bowl. No refined sugars, salts or oils are added. The Berry Bowl is topped with strawberries, blueberries, goji berries and granola.
Some of the more popular juices include the Green Goddess. It contains apple, spinach, romaine, kale, cucumber, celery, mint, ginger and lemon. The Hulk has spinach, romaine, kale, cucumber, celery, ginger and lemon.
Among the sought-after smoothies is Peanut Butter Bliss. It has banana, peanut butter, cacao, dates, hemp, flax, chia, house-made cashew milk and is topped with cacao. Many ingredients are made in-house.
Some drinks also feature the mushroom lion’s mane.
Its wellness shots are condensed versions of some of the juices.
“We try to keep everything as wholefood and raw and natural as possible,” said Veihdeffer, a nutrition consultant. “We’re really particular about all the specific fruits and vegetables we use for the juices.”
The Juicery offers a variety of hot beverages, coffees and lattes as well.
The menu is available online at orderthejuiceryatoakmont.com.
More more grab-and-go items, salads and breakfast options are in the works. They are hiring.
