Fridays on Fifth event to open summer season

The first Fridays on Fifth event of the season will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday along Fifth Avenue in New Kensington.

Shops, restaurants and breweries will be open and there will be music and food trucks. The events are sponsored by the city recreation commission and will continue on the fourth Friday of each month through September.


Church collecting gently used shoes for charity

The Mission Team at East Union Presbyterian Church, West Deer, is collecting new and gently used shoes for a project to build a school in Burkina Faso, Africa.

A donation box is located outside the church community center, 292 East Union Road. For details, call Mary Lynn at 412-767-5750.

Thursday : The Outdoor Discovery Center at Crook Creek will offer a soap making class from 6 to 8 p.m. at the center, 142 Kerr Road. Each participant will make three bars of soap and choose their own color, scent and additive. Cost: $22. Reservations required: Reservations: armstrongodc.org.

Brackenridge

Today: Al-Anon will meet at 8 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 847 10th Ave. The group offers help and hope for families and friends of alcoholics.

Thursday: Bingo will begin at 7:15 p.m. at the American Legion, 845 First Ave.

Frazer

Saturday : The New Kensington Camera Club and Focus on the Arts Gallery will offer a free workshop, “Macro Photography,” from 1 to 4 p.m. in suite 208 at Pittsburgh Mills Mall. Use Entry 2 by M@C Discount. Barry Sell will be the instructor. Bring your camera. Reservations are encouraged, but not required. Gilpin

Thursday: Gilpin Volunteer Fire Department will host bingo at 7:15 p.m. at the firehall, 113 Firehall Road.

Harrison

Today: Faith Lutheran Church, 1500 Broadview Blvd., will host a Becky’s Closet community clothing store from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church. Clothing available at very low cost. Donations welcome during this time.

Today: Allegheny Valley Association of Churches Food Bank will be open from 1:30 to 5 p.m. at 1913 Freeport Road, Natrona Heights. Food bank participants can receive food allotments twice per month. Those who are not yet registered should come from 3 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Details and alternate times: 724-226-0606, ext. 10.

Today: The Agape Thrift Shop at Grace United Methodist Church, 1333 Freeport Road, will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. Clean spring clothing in all sizes is needed. No housewares or bedding please due to lack of space. Bring donations on Wednesday or leave them on the front porch. Do not place donations in the blue bins behind the church.

Thursday: A Girl Scout information night will be at 5 p.m. at Community Library of Allegheny Valley, 1522 Broadview Blvd. Details: Beth, 412-713-5259 or bostrosky@gswpa.org.

Friday: Natrona Heights Veterans of Foreign Wars will have bingo at 7 p.m. at the post, 894 Veterans Lane. Doors open at 6 p.m., and there will be specials, a 50/50 raffle and final game jackpot.

Jefferson

Thursday: Bingo will be at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion, 754 N. Pike Road. Doors open at 5 p.m. Under new management with higher payouts. The kitchen will be open. Proceeds benefit post and auxiliary projects.

Leechburg

Thursday: A New Path Al-Anon Family Group, a free, confidential program for anyone whose life has been affected by someone else’s drinking, will meet at 7 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 251 Main St. Meetings will be now be the fourth Thursday of each month.

Lower Burrell 

Today: There will be free DJ Trivia at 7 p.m. at the Moose, 499 Reimer St. Members and qualified guests welcome.

Thursday: Peoples Library will host an arts and crafts time for children 6 and younger and their caregiver at 1 p.m. at the library, 3052 Wachter Ave. No reservations required. Details: 724-339-1021.

Oct. 22: New Kensington Moose is accepting table reservations for a fall craft and vendor show planned for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the lodge, 499 Reimer St. Spaces limited to one representative from each company on a first come, first served basis. Saxonburg

Thursday: Lower Valley Community Food Bank will distribute food from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday from the rear entrance of the Springdale borough building, 325 School St. Do not arrive before 12:45 p.m. Anyone in need of food who lives in Springdale, Springdale Township, Cheswick, Harmar and the sections of Indiana Township and West Deer with a zip code of 15024 is welcome. New recipients can register on Thursday.

Tarentum

Today: Alle-Kiski Valley Heritage Museum will sponsor a game night from 6 to 8 p.m. at the museum, 224 E. Seventh Ave. Games will be available or bring your own.
