Apollo May Daze celebration planned

The Apollo May Daze festival will be from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the borough.

There will be a town-wide yard sale, art and craft vendors, food trucks and sidewalk sales. Other attractions will include a children’s Fun Zone with a bouncy house, hands-on art demonstrations and climbing wall in Owens Grove Park, a book sale at Apollo Memorial Library and the reopening of the Apollo Area Historical Society and Drake Log Cabin. Apollo Kiski Little League will host their Opening Day festivities Saturday that will include raffles, food and vendors.


Summer food program available for children

The Westmoreland County Food Bank will offer a summer food service program for children over the summer at The Center on Franklin Avenue, 262 Franklin Ave., Vandergrift.

Breakfast and lunch will be served from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays June 21 through Aug. 13 to all children 18 and younger. Grab and go meals will be available.

Photography and art show planned at Pittsburgh Mills gallery

The New Kensington Camera Club and Focus on the Arts Gallery will host a spring photography and art show, “Art in Bloom,” Fridays and Saturdays through May 15 at the gallery in Pittsburgh Mills Mall, Frazer.

Hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Fridays and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays. There will be over 60 entries all made by artists from the Alle-Kiski Valley. Visitors may vote for their favorite entry and will be eligible to win a $25 gift card to any mall business. Admission is free.

Volunteers welcome for Route 366 community cleanup

A community cleanup of Route 366 is planned Saturday in New Kensington.

Volunteers are welcome and should meet at 9 p.m. in the parking lot behind Donut Connection. Supplies will be available.


Run on the River to benefit YMCA

Valley Points Family YMCA annual Run On The River will be June 12 at K-9 Officer Derek Kotecki Memorial Park, Wildlife Lodge Road, Lower Burrell. Events are planned for every age and skill level.

Registration fees are $25 for the 5K and $30 for the 10K. Prices go up $5 each after April 30. For more information and to register visit runsignup.com/Race/PA/LowerBurrell/RunOnTheRiver.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the YMCA’s Annual Support Campaign.


Family movie series to feature, ‘Tangled’

The free Allegheny County Family Drive-in Movie series planned Friday in Boyce Park wave pool parking lot will be, “Tangled,” rated PG.

Gates open at 6 p.m. and the movie starts at dusk. There is a 100-vehicle limit, first-come, first served. Gates will close when the movie starts, or the venue reaches capacity.

Movie audio is played through a radio transmitter on 87.9 FM.

Blood donations are tested for covid-19 antibodies. Bring and ID mask. Lower Burrell

May 29: TryLife Center is accepting donations for the basket auction planned for the craft and vendor show at Quality Inn, New Kensington. Baskets can be taken to the center, 1155 Wildlife Lodge Road. Call 724-339-9399 to schedule a delivery time or arrange pickup.

Saturday: Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania will host a registration event from noon to 2 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars pavilion, 1601 Wildlife Lodge Road. Girls in pre-k through 11th grade are eligible. Face masks and social distancing required.

New Kensington

Thursday: Knead Community Café in New Kensington will hand out free grab-and-go dinners from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the café, 1011 Barnes St. This week’s meals are sponsored by Westmoreland Community Action. Those picking up meals are reminded to observe social distancing while waiting in line.
