Lower Burrell festival to benefit animal rescues

The Rallying for Rescues festival will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday in Lower Burrell’s Kotecki Park on Wildlife Lodge Road.

Local animal rescue organizations will have adoptable pets on hand and there will be food trucks, craft vendors and music. Proceeds will be shared evenly by all of the participating animal rescues.


Tarentum church collecting used mobility aides

Central Presbyterian Church, Tarentum, is collecting canes, crutches, walkers, shower chairs and manual wheelchairs to be donated to Global Links, a charity that works to redirect still-useful materials away from landfills to support public health programs in targeted communities throughout the Western Hemisphere.

Clean items can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays through Aug. 31 at the church, 305 Allegheny St. For details and alternate drop-off times, call the church at 724-224-9220.


Nick Lowe and Los Straitjackets to perform at Hartwood Acres

The free 2025 Allegheny County Summer Concert series will feature Nick Lowe and Los Straitjackets at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Hartwood Acres Park Amphitheater, 4070 Middle Road, Hampton.

Bring a chair. Popup tents and umbrellas are permitted but must be taken down before the performance begins. Dogs are permitted but must be on a leash at all times and be up to date on all vaccinations and licensing.

Harrison   

Today: Allegheny Valley Hospital Auxiliary will sell tickets for a back-to-school lottery basket raffle from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the hospital main lobby, 1301 Carlisle St. The winner will receive $100 in Pennsylvania Lottery scratch-off tickets and a backpack filled with $75 worth of school supplies. Saturday : A free guided hike with park rangers will be from 9 to 11 a.m. at Harrison Hills Park. Meet at the environmental learning center. Aug. 10: Allegheny County Park Rangers will present a free guided walk, “The Legacy of Mary Lawrence,” from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Hartwood Acres Mansion. Washington Township

West Deer  

Today and Saturday: Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh will host a free star party at 7 p.m. at the Nicholas E. Wagman Observatory, 225 Kurn Road, in Deer Lakes Regional Park, weather permitting. Bring binoculars, a blanket and camping chair. Use only parking lights when entering through the park gate. Aug. 16: West Deer Parks and Recreation Board and the Pennsylvania Game Commission will offer a hunter-trapper safety course from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at West Deer No. 3 Volunteer Firehall, 4418 Gibsonia Road. This course and the passing of a certification exam at the end of the class is required for all first-time hunters and trappers before they can buy a license.
