Civil War program set Sunday in Apollo

The Apollo Area Historical Society will sponsor “A Day in the Life of a Civil War Soldier” from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Drake Log Cabin, Williams Alley, Apollo.

There will be a Civil War encampment from 1 to 5 p.m. with the 40th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Reserves Company C and 62nd Regiment Pennsylvania Company D. Jonathan Richardson will tell the story of Gen. Samuel Jackson at 2 p.m. and a description of regular day for a Civil War soldier will be discussed at 3 p.m. by Don and Becky Becker. Cindy McShane will give a talk at 4 p.m. about famous women of the Civil War.

Donations will be accepted.


Casino Theatre plans auditions for holiday show

The Casino Theatre in Vandergrift will hold auditions for its 26th annual Hometown Christmas production Aug. 28 at Just Dance by Justin Albert, 154 Farragut Ave., second floor, Vandergrift.

Plan to arrive before 6 p.m. when information about the show will be discussed. The production will be Nov. 24, 25 and 26 at the theater. This year’s show will be a play with a large cast and cast members must be at least 5 years old. Adults should be prepared to sing a short selection and children will be asked to read from a script that will be provided.

Band concert in Apollo canceled

The concert by the Kiski Valley Community Band planned for Sunday in Apollo is canceled due to a schedule conflict.


New board member needed at Vandergrift library

Vandergrift Public Library is looking for a volunteer to serve on the library board of directors.

Representation is needed from East Vandergrift or Oklahoma Borough. Board members must be available at 6:30 p.m. the third Monday of each month for the meeting.

Sunday: The Second Sunday pop up market will be from noon to 4 p.m. in the Cheswick Plaza parking lot. There will be crafters, vendors and food trucks. Sponsored by the Cheswick Community Relations Board.

East Vandergrift 

Today: East Vandergrift Community Foundation, a non-profit formed to support community and educational initiatives, will sponsor a Food Truck Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. on Chambers Street in the borough. There will be food vendors, beer, music, a raffle and an opportunity to socialize.

Gilpin

Saturday: A car show to benefit Leechburg Youth Baseball Association will be from noon to 6 p.m. in Gilpin-Leechburg Park, 167 Park Road. Vehicle check-in begins at 11 a.m. There will be prizes, food trucks, vendors, a DJ, basket raffle and 50/50.

Harmar

Wednesday: Fox Chapel Area High School will host a Vitalant community blood drive from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Vitalant Donor Center, 2585 Freeport Road, Suite 207. Harrison

Saturday: The Diaper Pantry at Christ Our Hope Anglican Church will distribute diapers from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, 926 Painter Ave., and at Sheldon Park, both in Natrona Heights. Recipients must drive up and remain in their vehicles. First-time recipients must provide their own identification, the child’s birth certificate and a current WIC or SNAP card.

Saturday: A clothing and toy giveaway will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Word of Faith Christian Fellowship, 42 Chestnut St., Natrona.

Indiana Township

Sunday: The Allegheny County Summer Concert Series at Hartwood Acres Park Amphitheater will feature Latin music with Los Amigos Invisibles and Stone Throwers at 7:30 p.m. Food trucks will open at 6 p.m. Rain or shine. A $20 per vehicle fee will benefit the Allegheny County Department of Human Services.

Lower Burrell

Today: The Burrell High School Marching Band will host its annual preview night at 6 p.m. at the high school field, Puckety Church Road. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. There will be a basket raffle and 50/50.

Saturday: The ClothesLine Ministry at Bethesda Lutheran Church, 3084 Leechburg Road, will be open from 9 a.m. to noon. Clothing, shoes and purses will be sold for 10 cents each. The jewelry room will be open. Free school supplies will be given to students accompanied by an adult.

Saturday: The farmers market will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Bon Air Elementary School, 3260 Leechburg Road.

Saturday: The Veterans of Foreign Wars will feature the G6 Band from 8 to 11 p.m. at the post. Members and three guests welcome.

Pie varieties: banana cream, coconut meringue, lemon meringue, apple, blackberry, blueberry, cherry, Dutch apple, peach, razzleberry, blue raspberry, bumbleberry, peach raspberry, pineapple cherry and strawberry rhubarb; all $11. Cinnamon rolls: traditional white, maple raisin, cream cheese, peanut butter crunch and strawberry; pepperoni rolls, ham and Swiss rolls and pyro rolls, $6; pumpkin rolls, $11; and snails, $9.
