Scouts plan flag retirement ceremony in Vandergrift

Boy Scout Troop 551 of Hyde Park will conduct a flag retirement ceremony at 11 a.m. Aug. 22 at the Vandergrift Community Pool.

The public is welcome to drop off flags for retirement. Flags can be whole, or cut into red stripes, white stripes and the blue starred section.

Anyone who is at least 11 years old and interested in joining Scouts is encouraged to attend.


Apollo Area Historical Society seeks memorabilia

The Apollo Area Historical Society is seeking items for its museum.

Items on the wish list include artifacts, yearbooks, photos and gym uniforms from Apollo-Ridge High School, artifacts and photos from the 1960s Legionettes and the 1980s Rainbow Connection marching groups, photos and artifacts from Apollo and Elders Ridge schools and photos from the 1991 Septiquin Centennial parade and Owen’s Grove and the old building there.

Items can be dropped off from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays at the museum, 317 N. Second St. For alternate arrangements, call 724-478-2899.


HOPE Center looking for childcare volunteers

The Alle-Kiski HOPE Center is looking for volunteers to help with childcare.

Clearances and training are required and will be provided by the center.

Donations being accepted by Casino Theatre

The Casino Theater in Vandergrift is accepting donations to help with the upkeep and maintenance of the theater during the current pandemic.

Since mid-March six shows at the theater have been canceled, but the costs of maintenance and utility bills continue to come in. Revenue lost from these performances could top $25,000.

The theater is marking its 120th anniversary this year and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Donations can be sent to Casino Theatre Restoration and Management, 145 Lincoln Ave., PO Box 202, Vandergrift PA 15690. Contributions are fully tax deductible.

Aug. 28: The Butler High School Class of 1970 reunion is canceled and rescheduled to be the weekend of Aug. 28, 2121, at Butler Country Club. There are plans for a neighborhood night and golf outing.

Ford City

Aug. 29: The Armstrong County Labor Day Parade and Ethnic Feastival are canceled.

Freeport

September: The annual September By the River festival is canceled.

October: The Freeport Halloween carnival is canceled. 

Harrison

Aug. 22: The Wine and Food Festival planned at Burtner House is canceled. No decision on the Harvest Festival has been made yet.  

Leechburg

Sept. 19: The annual Pink Day festival is canceled.

Oakmont

Oct. 3: The Monte Carlo Night planned by Springdale High School Alumni Association is canceled. Association meetings are suspended until further notice.

Sept. 12: Springdale Volunteer Fire Department has canceled the Cash Bash. The 50/50 Progressive Raffle tickets dated May 9, 2020 will be drawn on Sept. 12. The fire company thanks everyone for their continued support during this trying time.

Sept. 13: The craft and vendor fair is canceled.

Washington Township

Sept. 19: The annual Moonlight Bingo at Washington Township Volunteer Firehall is canceled.

West Deer

Aug. 28: The West Deer Police Benefit Golf Scramble that was to be May 1 is rescheduled to be Aug. 28 at Pittsburgh North Golf Course, Richland Township. Cost: $85 per golfer. Registration form: click here.
