Vandergrift PD to collect school supplies

The Vandergrift Police Department is collecting school supplies through Aug. 15 for students at Kiski Area East Elementary School in the borough.

Items being collected listed in order of need includes tissues, dry erase markers, boys backpacks, Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer and crayons. Monetary donations are also welcome and will be used to purchase supplies.

Contributions can be left in care of Officer Joe Gray at the police station.

View the Ring Nebula at free star parties

Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh will host star parties at 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Nicholas E. Wagman Observatory, 225 Kurn Road, in Deer Lakes Regional Park, weather permitting.

You can bring your telescope, and AAAP members will be happy to help you with set up and operation. Bring binoculars, a blanket and camping chair.

Salvation Army to host annual back to school fair

The Allegheny Valley Salvation Army is accepting reservations for the annual Back to School Bash scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Salvation Army center, 917 Brackenridge Ave., Brackenridge.

Children must live in the following zip code areas to attend: 15006, 15014, 15030, 15032, 15049, 15065, 15075, 15076, 15084 and 15238 and must attend the event to receive a backpack.
