Small Acts of Kindness

Did your neighbor call and check on you, or bring a face mask or groceries? Free movie to be screened at Hartwood Acres Park

The free Allegheny County Date Night Drive-In Movie series will feature the film, “Knives Out,” rated PG-13, at sundown Friday at Hartwood Acres Park Amphitheater parking lot, Indiana Township.

Gates open at 7 p.m. Attendance is limited to the first 300 vehicles so plan to arrive early. Movie audio is played through a radio transmitter on 87.9 FM.


Fire companies selling lottery calendars

Arnold No. 2 and Lower Burrell No. 3 fire departments are selling 2021 lottery calendars.

Cost is $20 and they are good through the end of 2021. Winning numbers will be from the evening Pa. Lottery three-digit drawing.

To buy a calendar, see a member of either fire company or stop in at the Lower Burrell station, 3255 Leechburg Road.


Harrison diaper pantry plans monthly drive-up distribution

The Diaper Pantry at Christ Our Hope Anglican Church, Harrison, will distribute diapers 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church, 926 Painter Ave., and at Sheldon Park, both in Natrona Heights.

Recipients must drive up and remain in their vehicles.

First-time recipients must still provide present their own identification, the child’s birth certificate and a current WIC or SNAP card.

Allegheny Valley School District

Today: Allegheny Valley School Board will conduct a special voting meeting online to approve the district phased school reopening health and safety plan at 7 p.m. Access information: avsdweb.org, no later than 5 p.m. today. Public welcome.

Gilpin 

Today: Gilpin Volunteer Fire Department kitchen will be sell take out food from 5 to 7 p.m. Menu: visit the department Facebook page. Orders: 724-845-7200, leave a message

Harrison  

September: Community Library of Allegheny Valley is sponsoring a cash calendar raffle for September. Winning numbers will be taken from the 7 p.m. Pennsylvania Daily Pick 3 drawing. Cost: $5, for two numbers. Ticket numbers will be chosen at random and e-mailed to you. Winnings will be mailed. Tickets: visit the library website.

Indiana Township

Aug. 16: Rural Ridge Volunteer Department is accepting orders for a barbeque chicken dinner set for noon to 5 p.m. at the firehall, 135 Little Deer Creek Road. Dine in or takeout. Menu: half chicken, baked beans, coleslaw and macaroni and cheese. Cost: $12. Debit cards accepted. Orders: 724-265-4000 or send an instant message on the department Facebook page.

Kiski Township

Aug. 11: Kiski Township Volunteer Fire Department is sponsoring a Marianna’s Hoagie and Pizza sale. Orders and payment are due by Aug. 11. Delivery will be Aug. 19. Hoagies are 14 inches and varieties are Italian, ham and Swiss, turkey, All-American and ham club. Pizzas are 12 inches in diameter and varieties are pepperoni, cheese, white and meat supreme. Leechburg

Saturdays: The Leechburg Area Museum, 118 First St., will be open from noon to 3 p.m. Face masks and social distancing are required.

Lower Burrell

Saturday: The ClothesLine ministry at Bethesda Lutheran Church, 3084 Leechburg Road, will take place outdoors from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Face masks and social distancing required. The number of people admitted at one time may be limited. Clothing, shoes and purses will be 10 cents each and school supplies will be given to each child who attends with an adult. Saturday: The Lower Burrell Farmers Market will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in city hall parking lot, 2800 Bethel St. Face masks required. Details: 724-339-1452

New Kensington

Saturday: The Community Clothes Closet, 1129 Kenneth Ave., New Kensington, will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free hot dogs will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A buy-one, get-one-free sale will be until the end of summer. Face masks are required, and a maximum of 25 people can be in the store at one time. Donations welcome.

Saturday: Animal Protectors of Allegheny Valley will have a yard sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the new location, 730 Church St. Details: 724-339-7388

North Apollo

Saxonburg

Saturday: Knoch High School Cheerleaders will have a car wash from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the new Sprankle’s Neighborhood Market, W. Water Street. Donations welcome. Rain date is Aug. 15.

Sept. 6 and 7: The annual Labor United Celebration planned for Northmoreland Park is canceled.

Butler

Aug. 28: The Butler High School Class of 1970 reunion is canceled and rescheduled to be the weekend of Aug. 28, 2121 at Butler Country Club. There are plans for a neighborhood night and golf outing.

Ford City

Aug. 29: The Armstrong County Labor Day Parade and Ethnic Feastival are canceled.

Freeport

September: The annual September By the River festival is canceled.

October: The Freeport Halloween carnival is canceled. 

Harrison

Aug. 22: The Wine and Food Festival planned at Burtner House is canceled. No decision on the Harvest Festival has been made yet.  

Kiski Township

Today, Friday and Saturday: The rummage sale planned at Spring Church Lutheran Church is canceled.

Leechburg

Sept. 19: The annual Pink Day festival is canceled.

Lower Burrell

Aug. 10: Lower Burrell Council meetings are canceled.

Oakmont

Springdale 

Oct. 3: The Monte Carlo Night planned by Springdale High School Alumni Association is canceled. Association meetings are suspended until further notice.

Sept. 12: Springdale Volunteer Fire Department has canceled the Cash Bash. The 50/50 Progressive Raffle tickets dated May 9, 2020 will be drawn on Sept. 12. The fire company thanks everyone for their continued support during this trying time.

Sept. 13: The craft and vendor fair is canceled.

West Deer

West Deer Farmers Market is canceled.

Aug. 28: The West Deer Police Benefit Golf Scramble that was to be May 1 is rescheduled to be Aug. 28 at Pittsburgh North Golf Course, Richland Township. Cost: $85 per golfer. Registration form: click here.
