Youth football association to collect new and used shoes
Allegheny Valley Youth Football Association is collecting gently-used and new shoes from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays Dec. 21 through Feb. 15 at Veterans Memorial Field, Lincoln Avenue, Springdale.
Shoes will be redistributed through the Funds2Orgs network of small business partners and helps them to create, maintain and grow small businesses in developing countries.
Other drop-off locations include Springdale Free Public Library, 331 School St.; Legends of Pittsburgh Performance and Fitness Center, Pittsburgh Mills Mall; Dimensions in Hair by Kathy Miller, 925 Pittsburgh St., Springdale; and Riverview Abbey Carpet and Floor, 516 Jones St., Verona.

Leechburg Elks plan hoop shoot event
The Leechburg Elks Hoop Shoot competition will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday in the Leechburg Area High School gymnasium.
Boys and girls ages 8 to 13 may participate in the free throw event sponsored by the Elks Foundation.
Registration will be from 10 to 10:15: a.m. There is no entry fee. Winners will advance through district, state and regional contests.

Train display to benefit food bank
The Model Train Association at Bull Creek United Presbyterian Church, 224 Tarentum-Culmerville Road, is hosting its annual holiday model train display from 6 to 8 p.m. Fridays, 2 to 8 p.m. Saturdays, and 2 to 6 p.m. Sundays in December at the church in West Deer.
Special hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Dec. 27, 2 to 8 p.m. Dec. 28 and 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 29. For a private group viewing, call Billy at 724-272-3401 or Rick at 724-448-8444.
Admission is $3; $1 for children younger than 12. Canned goods will be collected to benefit the Allegheny Valley Association of Churches Food Bank.

Friday: The Elks will have bar bingo at 7:30 p.m. at the lodge, 219 E. Sixth Ave. There will be regular bingo, specials and a jackpot game. Members and guests welcome.

Tarentum and Brackenridge Recreation Boards would like to express their appreciation to everyone who made the recent Christmas parade such a huge success. Thanks to the police and public works departments of both boroughs, all of the businesses that participated or donated, Summit Hose Company for lining the parade up, Marine Detachment 827, American Legion, the judges and especially the participants.
Winners of the float competition included: first place, Faith Community Partners; second, 4 Wheels, Monroeville; and third, Sylvan Pools.
Winners of the decorated fire truck contest were: first place, Eureka Fire and Rescue; second place, Summit Hose Company; and third place, Fawn Fire Department No. 2.
