Rotary offers annual scholarships

The Bob Williams Memorial Rotary Scholarship, sponsored by Rotary District 7305 Foundation, will award at least eight $5,000 scholarships to high school seniors for the 2023-24 academic year.

High school seniors and vocational and GED students in Allegheny and Beaver counties as well as those who attend Valley, Burrell and Kiski Area high schools are eligible to apply. Students must have a grade-point average of 2.5 or higher and complete an essay that highlights their community and school service.

Complete application materials are found on Rotary District 7305 website, rotarydistrict7305.org, under the scholarship link and from school guidance counselors. Applications must be postmarked by Feb. 28. For details, contact Robert Arbuckle at rarbuckle66@gmail.com.

Free advice available for those with financial troubles

Allegheny Valley Association of Churches has free support services available for anyone who is having trouble making ends meet or needs help with budgeting, talking to bill collectors or finding employment.

Avonmore

Wednesday: Avonmore Library will have a meeting for new volunteers at the library, 619 Allegheny Ave. Doors open and child abuse and criminal record clearances will be collected at 5 p.m. An update on plans will be at 5:30 p.m. and volunteer training will be at 6 p.m. The library will be closed until Jan. 13.

Freeport

Wednesday: The Thrift Store Clothing Ministry at Freeport United Methodist Church, 211 Fourth St., will be closed for the holidays.

Leechburg 

Jan. 13: The Leechburg 175th Anniversary Committee will host a night at the races at the Marconi Club, 135 River Ave. Doors open at 6 p.m. and races will start at 7. Cost: $20, includes a horse, food and soft drinks; food and soft drinks only, $10. Donations for a basket raffle, desserts and cases of pop are welcome. Drop off donations at Leechburg Public Library. Deadline to purchase a ticket with a horse is Jan. 4. Must be 21 to attend. Proceeds will be used to fund the 2025 celebration Details: 724-236-0080.

Lower Burrell

Today: A STEM-based craft workshop for all ages will be at 1 p.m. at Peoples Library, 3052 Wachter Ave. Details: 724-339-1021.

Springdale  

Today: The diaper pantry at St. Mark Lutheran Church will distribute free diapers from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church, 600 Pittsburgh St. Recipients must register in advance. First-time recipients must provide their own ID, the child’s birth certificate and a current WIC or SNAP card. Distributions will be the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. Today: Lower Valley Community Food Bank will distribute food from 1 to 3 p.m. at the rear entrance of the Springdale borough building, 325 School St. Do not arrive before 12:45 p.m. Anyone in need of food who lives in Springdale, Springdale Township, Cheswick, Harmar and the sections of Indiana Township and West Deer with a zip code of 15024 is welcome. New recipients can register today.

Tarentum

Saturday: The Clothing Closet at Central Presbyterian Church, 305 Allegheny St., will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Details: 724-224-9220.

Upper Burrell

Jan. 1: Upper Burrell and Export volunteer fire departments are selling 2024 lottery calendars Cost: $20, includes a chance to win $10,000 throughout the year. Daily amounts differ. Vandergrift  

Dec. 31: Vandergrift Public Library is conducting a 100,000 penny collection challenge through the end of the year. Bring your pennies to the library, 128C Washington Ave., or TinyCause or Champion’s Crusaiders Rescue. Funds raised will be split between the three organizations.
