Christmas tree recycling offered in Allegheny County

Allegheny County is offering its annual Christmas tree recycling program from 8 a.m. to dusk through Jan. 14 at all nine regional parks.

Local parks include:

• Boyce Park, Plum: soccer fields parking lot

• Deer Lakes Park, West Deer: Veterans Shelter parking lot

• Harrison Hills Park, Natrona Heights, Harrison: parking lot at the intersection of Chipmunk and Cottontail drives.

• Hartwood Acres Park, Indiana Township: mansion parking lot

Knead Community Cafe closed

Knead Community Café in New Kensington is closed for the holidays.

The café will reopen for business at 11 a.m. Thursday. For details, visit kneadcommunitycafe.org/events.


Tarentum Elks to host hoop shoot contest

The Tarentum Elks will host their annual free Hoop Shoot contest for students at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Allegheny Valley YMCA, 5021 Freeport Road, Natrona Heights, Harrison.

Registration will begin at 4:30 p.m. Students must be 8 through 13 years old as of April 2020 and must bring proof of age.

Winners advance through district, state and regional contests. For questions, call event director Gretchen Hunter at 724-986-5058.


Lower Burrell Lions broom sale continues

Lower Burrell Lions will continue to sell brooms during the year at the city tax office and Ideal Cleaners on Leechburg Road.

Kittanning

Thursday: A free confidential support group for survivors of sexual assault will meet from 10 to 11 a.m. at the HAVIN office. Leechburg

Thursday: Al-Anon, a free, confidential program for anyone whose life has been affected by someone else’s drinking, will meet at 7 p.m. in First United Methodist Church, 251 Main St.

West Deer

Today: A New Year’s Eve party will be from 7:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the American Legion, 57 Superior Road, Curtisville. Cost: $10, includes buffet at 10 p.m., champagne toast at midnight and DJ and karaoke by Lew-Ne-Tunz. Side dishes appreciated. Public welcome, must be at least 21 to attend. Details: 724-265-9959
