Great Backyard Bird Count set for Saturday and Sunday

Friends of Harrison Hills Park invites the public to participate in the 23rd annual Great Backyard Bird Count from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the park Environmental Learning Center, Natrona Heights, Harrison.

Visitors can count birds for as little as 15 minutes or the whole session from inside the center and report their sightings. No experience is necessary.

Books, binoculars and experienced birders will be on hand to help out. No registration is required.


Tarentum Elks plan Super Bingo

Tarentum Elks will host a Super Bingo March 8 at the lodge, 219 E. Sixth Ave.

Doors open at noon and early birds will begin at 2 p.m. Admission is $25 and includes 16 cards, four specials and a $1,000 must-go jackpot.

Library board meeting rescheduled

The meeting of the Board of Directors of Community Library of Allegheny Valley that was planned for Thursday has been rescheduled for 6:30 p.m. Feb. 20 in the community room at the library, 1522 Broadview Blvd., Natrona Heights. The public is welcome.

Feb. 19: Community Library of Allegheny Valley will offer an adult workshop on book folding from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the library, 1522 Broadview Blvd. Books will be supplied. The class is two hours solely for the purpose of helping everyone understand and grasp the concept of book folding. Feb. 20: Plum Community Center will sponsor a Mardi Gras dance from 6 to 9 p.m. at the center, 499 Center New Texas Road. Admission: $10, includes beads, snacks and light refreshments. Friday: Tarentum Book Club will meet at the home of Linda Gibson. The selection to be reviewed by Linda Robertson will be, “Rudy,” by Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger. The committee will be Marlene Leslie, Kathy Zigo and Ruth Schriver.

Vandergrift

Friday: Vandergrift Public Library and Kiski Area Youth Network will host a free after-hours Teen Night from 6 to 10 p.m. for students in seventh through 12th grade at the library, 128C Washington Ave. There will be food, games, video games and movies. Details: 724-568-2212

Free smoking and vaping cessation clinic offered

Citizens Family Health Clinic, 251 Seventh St., will offer a free smoking and vaping cessation class from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Feb. 25 at the clinic.

Free Kidney Smart class planned

Allegheny Valley Hospital’s PriorityCare program will host a free Kidney Smart class at 1 p.m. Feb. 27 in the auditorium of the AVH New Kensington Outpatient Center, 651 Fourth Ave.

Topics will include how kidneys function, chronic kidney disease, how to best manage the disease, treatment choices, help with diets and exercise.

Hearth health program set at UPMC St. Margaret

UPMC St. Margaret and the St. Margaret Foundation will host “Be Strong At Heart,” from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 25 at the conference centers A, B and C, 815 Freeport Road.

Cardiologist Dr. Michael J. Curren will host a discussion and explain how simple lifestyle changes can improve your overall heart health. There will be free blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose screenings and heart health information. Nine hours of fasting is recommended for the cholesterol screening.
