Animal Protectors seeking donations

Animal Protectors of Allegheny Valley is accepting donations of pet food and supplies for its community pantry.

Donations can be dropped off from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. any day at the rear entrance of the shelter, 730 Church St., New Kensington.

Bereavement event for children planned

Good Samaritan Hospice, a mission of Concordia Lutheran Ministries, will sponsor a free youth bereavement care event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 9 in the activity room at its office location, 116 Browns Hill Road, Middlesex Township.

The event “March Memories” will focus on creating personalized memory boxes. Youngsters who are 21 and younger who have experienced the death of a loved one and their caregiver are welcome. Check-in will begin at 9:30 a.m. and lunch will be served.

Tri City Soccer to sponsor Night at the Races

A night at the races to benefit Tri City Soccer will be March 2 at Kinloch Firehall, 915 New York Ave., Lower Burrell.

Doors open at 6 p.m., dinner will be at 7 p.m. and races start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 and include a buffet dinner, beer, alcoholic beverages, pop, water and snacks; horses, $10. There will be a silent auction, a 50-50 raffle, strip tickets and door prizes. No BYOB.

Students collecting personal items for those in need

The Fox Chapel Area High School Leadership Council Community Outreach Committee and the Foxes Boxes club are collecting hygiene items for those without housing through Feb. 29.

Items needed include disposable razors with plastic handles, feminine hygiene items, new men’s socks, toothbrushes and adhesive bandages, and travel size soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant and shaving cream. The students will assemble kits that will be delivered to local organizations that support Pittsburgh’s homeless population.

Donations can be dropped off from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays in the atrium at the main entrance of the high school, 611 Field Club Road, O’Hara.

Saturday: The Avonmore Library Winter Social will be from noon to 2 p.m. at the library and civic center, 423 Westmoreland Ave. There will be a soup cook-off and lunch fundraiser, STEAM activities, book giveaway and 50-50 raffle.

Brackenridge

Today: The Allegheny Valley Salvation Army and Community Center will distribute free grab-and-go lunches from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the center parking lot, 917 Brackenridge Ave. Free grocery items from Walmart and Aldi will be available. Everyone is welcome.

Today: Bingo will begin at 7:15 p.m. at the American Legion, 845 First Ave. Details: 724-994-6030.

Gilpin 

Today: Gilpin Volunteer Fire Department will host bingo at 7:15 p.m. at the firehall, 113 Firehall Road.

March 13 and 14: Christ the King Parish is accepting orders for nut, apricot and poppy seed rolls and paska bread for the Easter season. Long rolls are $14 each with an order deadline of March 4. Pickup: noon to 4 p.m. March 13 and 14. Round or braided paska are $8 with raisins, $7.50 without raisins, and orders are due March 11. Pickups: noon to 4 p.m. March 20. Harmar

March 9: The Pittsburgh Shrine Center, 1877 Shriners Way, will host a night at the races at the center. Doors open at 5 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. and races begin at 7 p.m. Cost: $25; horses, $10 additional; table of eight, $160. Saturday: Natrona Heights Veterans of Foreign Wars will host a polka dance plus from 7 to 10 p.m. in the post banquet room, 894 Veterans Lane. Polka music will be by the Heritage Band and classic rock by the Cool Change Band. There will be a cash bar and 50-50 raffle. Cover charge: $5, includes snacks. Public welcome.

Wednesday : The Kitchen Sink Book Club at Community Library of Allegheny Valley will meet at 5:30 p.m. at the library, 1522 Broadview Blvd. The selection will be “Horse” by Geraldine Brooks. Jefferson Township

Today: The diaper pantry at St. Mark Lutheran Church will distribute free diapers from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church, 600 Pittsburgh St. Recipients must register in advance. First-time recipients must provide their own ID, the child’s birth certificate and a current WIC or SNAP card. Distributions will be the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. Tarentum
