Outdoor Discovery Center to offer wilderness First Aid course

A wilderness First Aid and CPR course will be offered March 14 and 15 at the Outdoor Discovery Center at Crooked Creek, 142 Kerr Road, Bethel.

Sessions will begin at 8:30 a.m. each day and the course will include over 16 hours of training. Cost is $60 per person and participants must be at least 14 years old. The course is endorsed by the Boy Scouts of American and the Wilderness Medical Society.

Read Across America Day celebration planned at Vandergrift library

Vandergrift Public Library will have a free Read Across America Day celebration at 6 p.m. March 3 at the library, 128C Washington Ave.

Children age 3 to 12 can come dressed in clothing that has their favorite characters from stories or movies on them. There will be stories, an art project and cupcakes.

Registration is required. To register, call the library at 724-568-2212. Space is limited.

Kiddies’ Korner Nursery School, 616C First St., will host an open registration for the 2020-2021 year from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the school.

Highlands School District

Pre-K, Kindergarten fair set for March 5

Highlands School District will host the Kindergarten and Pre-K Registration and Early Childhood Fair from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. March 5 in the cafeteria at Highlands Early Childhood Center, 1060 Atlantic Ave., Brackenridge.

The fair will feature information about the kindergarten and pre-kindergarten programs and activities for children. Several local community groups and organizations will also be on hand.

Students must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1 to register for kindergarten. Students must be at least 3 years old on or before Sept. 1 to register for Pre-K Counts.

Documents required for registration include the child’s original birth certificate, two proofs and residency and immunization records, if available. Pre-K Counts registrations must also bring proof of income, such as two paystubs or W-2s. For more information on the specific documents required, visit goldenrams.com.

Leechburg Area/Kiski Area

Rotary Community Scholarship applications available

The Rotary Club of Leechburg will award four $1,000 community service scholarships to students living within the Leechburg and Kiski Area school districts who excel in community volunteerism and plan to further their postsecondary education.

Applicants must be seniors at Leechburg or Kiski Area high schools, or be home schooled, attend cyber school, private/parochial schools or full-day technical schools and live within one of these districts.

They must exemplify the spirit of Rotary and community volunteerism by way of their involvement, leadership and accomplishments in community projects throughout their high school career.

Applicants must complete an application and submit an essay on how their experiences and accomplishments reflect the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self.” In addition, a letter of recommendation from a community volunteer organization or institution where the applicant served is required. Pictures or a scrapbook showing the community service experience will be accepted.

Applications can be obtained from school guidance counselors or Robert DiCola, chairman, at 724-845-7363 or the Rotary website, leechburgrotary.org. Completed applications may be mailed or delivered to DiCola at 146 Market St., Leechburg, PA 15656.

Deadline for submitting completed applications is March 31.
