Grants available to Westmoreland County performing arts groups

The Westmoreland County Bureau of Parks and Recreation is offering grants to non-profit organizations to support art-related projects and activities that benefit county residents.

Local non-profit arts organizations and governmental units involved in the production or display of arts activities are eligible to apply, Eligible activities include projects involving music, theater, puppetry, dance and other performing and visual arts.

Projects that are not open to the public, take place outside the county, have a religious purpose or serve as vehicles for prizes, fundraising or academic credit are not eligible. Projects must take place between June 1 and Dec. 31, 2024. Application deadline is March 26. For an application, visit co.westmoreland.pa.us/parks or call 724-830-3950.

Brackenridge

Today: Al-Anon will meet at 8 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 847 10th Ave. The group offers help and hope for families and friends of alcoholics.

Thursday: Bingo will begin at 7:15 p.m. at the American Legion, 845 First Ave. Details: 724-994-6030.

Thursday: The Allegheny Valley Salvation Army and Community Center will distribute free grab-and-go lunches from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the center parking lot, 917 Brackenridge Ave. Free grocery items from Walmart and Aldi will be available. Everyone is welcome.

Feb. 17: The American Legion will feature the DaPhunk Band from 7 to 11 p.m. in the upper level of the post, 845 First Ave. There will be a 50-50 and raffles to win a $300 cash card and $500 worth of meat. Cost: $15. Public welcome. Tickets: see the bartender at the post.

East Vandergrift

Saturday : Our Lady, Queen of Peace Parish will host a cash bash in the church social hall, 411 McKinley Ave. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the first number will be drawn at 7 p.m. Cost: $30, includes food, beverages and a chance to win $3,000 in cash prizes. Must be 21 to attend. There will be pull tabs, a scratch-off lottery board, theme baskets and 50-50 raffles. Tickets: Crystal, 724-882-9212, after Sunday Mass in the church vestibule and in the parish office.

Freeport

Today: The Thrift Store Clothing Ministry at Freeport United Methodist Church, 211 Fourth St., will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. All items are free, but donations will be accepted. Items available include clothing of all sizes, bedding and window items. Donations of clothing, shoes and boots welcome; must be laundered and free from smoke and pet hair. Wheelchair accessible. Gilpin

Thursday: Gilpin Volunteer Fire Department will host bingo at 7:15 p.m. at the firehall, 113 Firehall Road.

Harrison  

Today: The Becky’s Closet community clothing store at Faith Lutheran Church, 1500 Broadview Blvd., will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church. Clothing will be available at very low cost. Donations welcome during these hours.

Today: Allegheny Valley Association of Churches Food Bank will be open from 1:30 to 5 p.m. at 1913 Freeport Road, Natrona Heights. Food bank participants can receive food allotments twice per month. Those who are not yet registered should come from 3 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday. The Sparrow’s Nest clothing and home goods ministry will be open from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Details and alternate times: 724-226-0606, ext. 10.

Today: The Agape Thrift Shop at Grace United Methodist Church, 1333 Freeport Road, will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. Clean clothing in all sizes is needed. No housewares or bedding please due to lack of space. Bring donations on Wednesday or leave them on the front porch. Do not place donations in the blue bins behind the church.

Friday: Natrona Heights Veterans of Foreign Wars will have bingo at 7 p.m. at the post, 894 Veterans Lane. Doors open at 6 p.m., and there will be specials, a 50-50 raffle and final game jackpot.

Feb.17: A free community movie night will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at Harvest Church, 1207 Pacific Ave. The film will be “Super Mario Brothers.” Free snacks and drinks will be served. Reservations required. Reservations: harvestpa.org/events. Details: 724-548-5643.

Jefferson Township

Thursday: Bingo will be at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion, 754 N. Pike Road. Doors open at 5 p.m. The kitchen will be open. Proceeds benefit post and auxiliary projects.

Leechburg

New Kensington

Parks Township

Friday: Parks Township Volunteer Fire Department will host bingo at 7 p.m. in the firehall, 1119 Dalmation Drive. Doors open at 5 p.m.

Plum 

Thursday: The dementia caregiver support group at South Butler Community Library will meet from 6 to 7 p.m. at the library, 240 W. Main St. The group will meet the second Thursday of each month and provides a safe place for caregivers to share their feelings and discuss their day-to-day challenges. No reservations required. Shaler

Feb. 9: A Valentine’s Couples Dinner featuring an all-you-can-eat Italian buffet will be at 6 p.m. at Stoneridge Covenant Church, 811 Dressel Road. Free childcare will be available onsite. Springdale

Thursday: Lower Valley Community Food Bank will distribute food from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday from the rear entrance of the Springdale borough building, 325 School St. Do not arrive before 12:45 p.m. Anyone in need of food who lives in Springdale, Springdale Township, Cheswick, Harmar and the sections of Indiana Township and West Deer with a zip code of 15024 is welcome. New recipients can register Thursday.

Thursday: The diaper pantry at St. Mark Lutheran Church will distribute free diapers from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church, 600 Pittsburgh St. Recipients must register in advance. First-time recipients must provide their own ID, the child’s birth certificate and a current WIC or SNAP card. Distributions are the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. Tarentum
