Volunteers needed to help order food in New Kensington

The City of New Kensington is partnering with Oasis Grocery Direct as a short-term solution to provide high quality, affordable food and groceries delivered to pick-up sites in the city.

Volunteers are needed to assist those who do not have access to a computer, internet or a smart phone to place orders for food.

Nominations sought for Alumni Hall of Fame

Allegheny Valley School District is accepting nominations for its Alumni Hall of Fame.

Nominees may be living or deceased and must have graduated at least 10 years ago from the district or attended school within the current boundaries of the district.

Nominations forms are available on the Alumni link of the Community page on the district website, avsdweb.org and at the central office and must be postmarked by Monday. For more information, contact Jan Zastawniak at 724-274-5300 or jzastawniak@avsd.k12.pa.us.


Quilt Show voting to end Saturday

Community Library of Allegheny Valley will host its annual Quilt Show through Saturday online and in person at the library, 1522 Broadview Blvd., Natrona Heights.

The public will vote on their favorite in each category. There is no cost to view or vote on a quilt. The quilt with the most votes in each category will be announced Jan. 31 and will receive a prize.

Feb. 11: Apollo Memorial Library is sponsoring a Valentine money raffle. The winning number will be the 7 p.m. Feb. 11 Pick 3 Pa. Lottery number. Cost: $2 per ticket, two numbers on each ticket. Winning number will receive $500 and the numbers one below and one above will each receive $25. Proceeds will benefit the library. Tickets: stop in at the library, 219 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Brackenridge

Today: Bingo will begin at 7:15 p.m. at the American Legion, 845 First Ave.

Gilpin 

Today: Gilpin Volunteer Fire Department will host bingo at 7:15 p.m. at the firehall, 113 Firehall Road.

Harrison  

Friday: Natrona Heights Veterans of Foreign Wars will have bingo at 7 p.m. at the post, 894 Veterans Lane. Doors open at 6 p.m., and there will be specials, a 50/50 raffle and final game jackpot.

Leechburg

Today: A New Path Al-Anon Family Group, a free, confidential program for anyone whose life has been affected by someone else’s drinking, will meet at 7 p.m. in First United Methodist Church, 251 Main St. Face masks and social distancing required.

Saturday: A concert featuring King Lou Hock and his Flying Circus will be at 6 p.m. at the Marconi Club, 135 River Ave. Doors open at 5 p.m. Proceeds from raffles and basket auction will benefit Pink Day. Lower Burrell

Saturday: The Veterans of Foreign Wars will feature John Melnick from 8 to 11 p.m. at the post. Members and three guests welcome.

Saturday: The Fallen Officer Food Drive will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Mogie’s Irish Pub & Magill’s Grill, 3210 Leechburg Road. Canned goods and non-perishable items will be collected to replenish the shelves at the Westmoreland County Food Bank. The event is in memory of fallen Lower Burrell police officer Derek Kotecki and New Kensington officer Brian Shaw.

New Kensington

Today: New Kensington Eagles Auxiliary Bingo will be at 7 p.m. at the aerie, 2134 Freeport Road. Doors open at 5 p.m. The kitchen will be open. Public welcome. Details: 724-448-7403.

Today: Knead Community Café in New Kensington will hand out free grab-and-go meals from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the café, 1011 Barnes St. This week’s meals were donated by the Rayburg Family. Those picking up meals should observe social distancing while waiting in line.

Feb. 9: St. George Orthodox Church will sell kibbee from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. the church hall, 1150 Leishman Ave. Cost: $45 per dozen or six for $24. Orders required by Feb. 4. Orders: 724-337-3918.

Oakmont

Today: The presentation about the Western Division of the Pa. Mainline Canal at Riverview Community Action Corp. is canceled and will be rescheduled.

Saxonburg

Through Feb. 5: South Butler County Library, 240 W. Main St., will sponsor a jigsaw puzzle exchange at the library. Bring a new or gently-used puzzle during operating hours and take home one for yourself. Puzzles for all ages accepted and must have all the pieces. Selections change daily. Details: 724-352-4810.

Springdale 

Today: Lower Valley Community Food Bank will distribute food from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday from the rear entrance of the Springdale borough building. Do not arrive before 12:45 p.m. Anyone in need of food who lives in Springdale, Springdale Township, Cheswick, Harmar and the sections of Indiana Township and West Deer with a zip code of 15024 is welcome. New recipients can register Thursday.

Feb. 5: Springdale Free Public Library will host a DIY teddy bear workshop for children who are at least 2 years old from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the library, 331 School St. Children will make their own stuffed animal to take home, and enjoy a story and snack. Tarentum

Washington Township
