Shoe collection to benefit Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

A used shoe collection to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society will continue through Feb. 10.

Team WISH (Warriors of Invincible Strength and Hope) is collecting worn shoes, sandals, heels, flip-flops, sneakers and athletic shoes. No ice skates, rollerblades or shoe boxes please. Please place shoes in a bag.

Donations are being accepted in all Kiski Area and Deer Lakes school district buildings, Stanford Lumber in Plum, York Chiropractic in New Kensington, The Buzz in Tarentum and Morabito Motors in Lower Burrell. For details, call Jennifer at 412-592-9361 or teamwish5016@gmail.com.

HOPE Center shares wish list

The Alle-Kiski Area HOPE Center, Tarentum, needs items for the clients that it serves.

Items needed include underwear, hair products for all types of hair, tweezers, disposable razors, shampoo and conditioner. Household products being accepted include dish detergent, trash cans, kitchen towels, paper towels, toilet paper, cleaning products and laundry detergent. Items needed for children include new baby monitors, bottles, sippy cups, baby wipes, slippers, socks and pajamas.

Gift cards in $10 increments from Sheetz, GetGo, Giant Eagle, Community Market and Walmart are also welcome.

Donations can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays at the HOPE Center administration building, 500 E. Eighth Ave., Tarentum. Call 724-224-1100 when you arrive.

Nominations wanted for new award to honor Concordia employees

Concordia Lutheran Ministries has announced a new honor, The Stephen W. Johnson Mission Award that will recognize its employees for exceptional service.

The award is named for Concordia’s late chairman of the board of directors, Stephen W. Johnson, who served for 19 years before passing away June 11, 2020.

Nominations will be accepted from through March 12. Current and former residents and patients, Concordia employees and members of the community can nominate current employees by filling out an application and describing how the nominee shows a dedication to Concordia’s mission. A banquet will be held in June to recognize the nominees and announce the winner.

Harrison

Lower Burrell

Saturday: The Veterans of Foreign Wars will feature John Melnick from 8 to 11 p.m. at the post. Members and three guests welcome.

Saturday: The Fallen Officer Food Drive will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Mogie’s Irish Pub & Magill’s Grill, 3210 Leechburg Road. Canned goods and non-perishable items will be collected to replenish the shelves at the Westmoreland County Food Bank. The event is in memory of fallen Lower Burrell police officer Derek Kotecki and New Kensington officer Brian Shaw.

Sunday: A takeout spaghetti dinner will be from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Moose, 53 Reimer St. Menu: spaghetti, salad and roll, $8.

New Kensington

Feb. 9: St. George Orthodox Church will sell kibbee from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. the church hall, 1150 Leishman Ave. Cost: $45 per dozen or six for $24. Orders required by Feb. 4. Orders: 724-337-3918.

Saxonburg

Through Feb. 5: South Butler County Library, 240 W. Main St., will sponsor a jigsaw puzzle exchange at the library. Feb. 5: Springdale Free Public Library will host a DIY teddy bear workshop for children who are at least 2 years old from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the library, 331 School St. Children will make their own stuffed animal to take home, and enjoy a story and snack. Washington Township
