Back-to-school drive collecting supplies, new clothing

Alle-Kiski Area HOPE Center Inc. is conducting a back-to-school drive for the families it serves.

Items needed include backpacks, pencils, pens, markers, crayons, glue sticks, folders, notebooks, binders, scissors and erasers as well as children’s socks underwear, shoes and clothing in sizes up to adult small.

Donations can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays at the administration building, 500 E. Eighth Ave., Tarentum.

Apollo

Today: Apollo Hose Company No. 2 will have bingo at 7 p.m. at the firehall, 325 N. Fourth St. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Cost: $25 per packet. The kitchen will be open with a limited menu. Details: 724-478-4831.

Sunday: First United Presbyterian Church, 401 First St., will host a concert by the Kiski Valley Community Band at 6 p.m. at the church. Hot dogs, snacks, baked goods and beverages will be sold at 5 p.m. Donations will be accepted to benefit the church general fund.

Apollo/East Vandergrift

Aug. 13: Our Lady, Queen of Peace and St. James parishes are accepting reservations for a bus trip to Rivers Casino, Pittsburgh. Cost: $30, includes $20 in free play. The bus will leave at 9 a.m. from St. James Church parking lot in Apollo. State-issued photo ID required for free play. Reservations: 724-478-4958.

Arnold

Today: The Tomb, 1821 Fifth Ave., will serve a free dinner from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Chuck Sessa will present a free gospel concert from 6 to 7 p.m.

Buffalo Township

Sunday: Takeout spaghetti dinners will be sold from 3 to 6 p.m. or until sold out at the White Star Club, 401 Shuster Drive. Menu: spaghetti and salad, $12; homemade meatballs, $3. Cash only. The next regular dinner will be in September. Orders: 724-295-2656.

East Deer

East Vandergrift

Harrison

Sunday/Wednesday: The Pittsburgh-Tarentum Campmeeting Association will have a worship service at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the campground, 1451 Main St., Natrona Heights. The Rev. Seth McClymonds of Zion Community Church will be the speaker. The Rev. Jeff Truscott of Faith Lutheran Church will preside at a service at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Public welcome.

Aug. 2: A free guided hike with park rangers will be from 9 to 11 a.m. at Harrison Hills Park. Meet at the environmental learning center. Kiski Township

Aug. 19: Lower Kiski Ambulance Service will offer a SafeSitter class with CPR training from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the service, 80 Kiski Ave. Students 11 to 13 welcome. Cost: $50, includes a handbook. Lower Burrell

Today: The city’s farmer’s Market will be open from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Bon Air School parking lot, 3260 Leechburg Road.

Today: The Veterans of Foreign Wars post, 1601 Wildlife Lodge Road, will feature the Cool Change band from 8 to 11 p.m. Members and three guests welcome.

Through Wednesday: The works of Allegheny Valley League of Artists members Eileen Kopelman and Patti Giordano will be on exhibit during operating hours at Peoples Library, 3052 Wachter Ave.

Monday: The quilting group at Holiday Park United Methodist Church, 81 Sandune Drive, will meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the church chapel. The group sews baby quilts for donation to those in need and the Linus Project. New members welcome. Meetings are the second and fourth Mondays of each month. Tarentum  

Today: Bethel AME Church will host a $1 spaghetti dinner from noon to 3 p.m. at the church, 250 Western Ave. Soups available will include pinto bean with smoked turkey, vegetable and haluski. Sunday: First Baptist Church will welcome home Terry Fox with the King’s Quartet at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at the church, 410 E. Third St. The church will distribute free detergent, bleach and scented beads to anyone in need after the service.

Upper Burrell   

Aug. 24: Skyview Radio Society is accepting space reservations for its swap ‘n shop set for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the club grounds, 2335 Turkey Ridge Road. Bring your own table. Cost: $5. Reservations: John Italiano, 724-339-3821.

West Deer  

Aug. 16: West Deer Parks and Recreation Board and the Pennsylvania Game Commission will offer a hunter-trapper safety course from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at West Deer No. 3 Volunteer Firehall, 4418 Gibsonia Road. This course and the passing of a certification exam at the end of the class is required for all first-time hunters and trappers before they can buy a license.
