Independence Day celebration planned in Apollo
Apollo Events Committee will host an Independence Day celebration Saturday and Sunday in the borough.
A community parade will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sugar Hollow Road and go along North Warren Avenue to the old Stanford parking lot, 310 Clifford Ave., where food trucks and vendors will be set up all day. There will be a covered seating area for diners and free family games such as tug of war, a three-legged race and horseshoes.
A fireworks display will be at 10 p.m. Sunday. The display will be set off across the Kiskiminetas River on Sheridan Road. No moving traffic will be permitted on Scenic Drive in Apollo during the fireworks display so that spectators can gather there. Bring a chair.
Super bingo to raise money for local scholarships
A super bingo to benefit the Cody Allen Trim Memorial Scholarship Fund will be at 2 p.m. July 13 at the Eagles, 2134 Freeport Road, New Kensington.
Doors open at noon. Admission is $40 in advance; $45 at the door, and includes a light lunch and bingo package. There will be a 50-50 quickie, silent auction and instant tickets. For tickets, call Maria at 412-478-9589 or Trim, 724-900-3385.
Three $1,000 scholarships were awarded to local high school seniors this year.
Kennywood Slovak Day celebration planned July 17
The Western Pennsylvania Slovak Day Committee will present the 102st annual American Slovak Day July 17 at Kennywood Park, West Mifflin.
The Slovak kitchen will open at 12:30 p.m. in pavilion no. 4. Cash only will be accepted. On the Main Pavilion Stage, No. 5, there will be Slovak cultural displays and vendors and Mass will be celebrated at 4 p.m. by Bishop Larry Kulick of the Diocese of Greensburg and priests and deacons from the Pittsburgh and Greensburg dioceses. After Mass, there will be a sing-along and the Pittsburgh Slovakians will perform.
