Community Library adds local history department

Community Library of Allegheny Valley now has a local history department at the Natrona Heights location, 1522 Broadview Blvd.

Formerly housed at the Tarentum branch that was closed in February, the collection includes over 1,400 books with special emphasis to our local area, atlases and maps, almost 1,200 rolls of microfilm of local newspapers including the Valley News Dispatch, funeral home and cemetery records, high school yearbooks and more.

Services available include copies of obituaries and research requests. Cost is $10 for two obituaries and $5 for each additional name. Extensive research is available for a fee when time permits.

Audubon Society offers camp for children

The Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania will host a one-day Audubon Explorers Camp for children in kindergarten through second grade from 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m. July 27 at Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve, 614 Dorseyville Road, Fox Chapel. Choose either session.

Campers will explore forests, fields and ponds for birds and bugs, make crafts and play games.

Cost is $30; and $25 for members. Maximum camp attendance is 15 campers per session and masks are required.

Harrison diaper pantry plans monthly drive-up distribution

The Diaper Pantry at Christ Our Hope Anglican Church, Harrison, will distribute diapers 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church, 926 Painter Ave., and at Sheldon Park, both in Natrona Heights.

Recipients must drive up and remain in their vehicles. First-time recipients must still provide present their own identification, the child’s birth certificate and a current WIC or SNAP card.

Donations of size 6 diapers and baby wipes will be accepted.

Allegheny Township/Harrison/New Kensington

July 31: Valley Points Family YMCA is sponsoring a Christmas in July raffle for complete one roll each of $20, $10 and $5 scratch-off tickets. Cost: $10 per chance. The winning number will be taken from the July 31 evening Pa. Pick-3 Lottery. Proceeds will benefit the YMCA Financial Assistance Program. Only 1,000 tickets will be sold. Apollo

Apollo Area Historical Society Museum has reopened. Hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays. The current display features vintage toys.

Gilpin

Saturday: Orders are being accepted by Gilpin Volunteer Fire Department for a drive-through takeout turkey dinner set for 3:30 p.m. at the firehall, 113 Firehall Road. Cost: $10. Advance orders preferred. Orders: 724-845-7200

Leechburg

The Leechburg Recycling Center is now open. Hours are 8 to 11 a.m. weekdays.

Lower Burrell

New Kensington

Today: Knead Community Café will be closed to indoor dining. The patio will remain open and the full menu available for takeout. The free grab and go meals will be offered at 5:30 p.m. today.

Saturday: A yard sale to benefit Animal Protectors of Allegheny Valley will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 730 Church St. Details: 724-339-7388

Saturday and Monday: The Community Clothes Closet, 1129 Kenneth Ave., is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays. Face masks are required, and a maximum of 25 people can be in the store at one time. Donations are welcome.

Oakmont

Today: The American Legion will sell takeout food via curbside pickup from 4 to 8 p.m. or until sold out at the post, 650 Isabella St. Menu: spaghetti with meatballs, salad, bread and butter, $7; hot or sweet sausage sandwich with peppers and onions, $5; sides and desserts available. Saturday: A free Movie in the Park will be from 8:30 to 10 p.m. at the soccer fields at Larry Mills Park, Fontana Drive. The featured film will be, “Playing With Fire,” rated PG. Gates open at 7:30 p.m. Bring a blanket or chair or sit in your car. Vehicles will not be permitted to idle, so bring a portable FM radio to receive the simulcast.

Saxonburg

Today: South Butler Community Library will host a health and science webinar, “Globe at Night,” at 2 p.m. online. Topics will include light pollution, its health effects and how to become a Citizen Scientist from your own backyard. Appropriate for tweens, teens and adults. Saturday: Springdale Free Public Library will begin to observe summer hours: noon to 8 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.

Tarentum

Saturday: A fundraiser to benefit Relay for Life will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Seita Jewelers, 215 E. Sixth Ave. Ten percent of each purchase will be donated to Relay for Life. Details: 724-224-9114

Thursday: Washington Township Supervisors will meet at 7 p.m. in the meeting room at the municipal building, 285 Pine Ron Church Road.


Cancellations and changes

Butler

Aug. 28: The Butler High School Class of 1970 reunion is canceled and rescheduled to be the weekend of Aug. 28, 2121 at Butler Country Club. There are plans for a neighborhood night and golf outing.

Fawn

Alle-Kiski Music Day Camp planned for July 26-31 is canceled due to the covid-19 pandemic. Organizers would like to thank those made donations this year.

Ford City

July 15-18: The Family FunFest sponsored by Ford City Renaissance Community Partnership is canceled.

Aug. 29: The Armstrong County Labor Day Parade and Ethnic Feastival are canceled.

Freeport

September: The annual September By the River festival is canceled.  

Harrison

Friday: The Highlands Area Relay for Life golf outing is canceled.

Aug. 22: The Wine and Food Festival planned at Burtner House is canceled. No decision on the Harvest Festival has been made yet.

Kittanning

July 30 to Aug. 2: The Fort Armstrong Folk Festival is canceled.

Leechburg

Sept. 19: The annual Pink Day festival is canceled.

Leechburg High School Class of 1960 Reunion planned for August is postponed until Aug. 7, 2021.

Leechburg Area School District

July 8 and 22: The Leechburg Area School Board meetings are canceled.

Oakmont

Saxonburg

Springdale

Springdale High School Alumni Association meetings are suspended until further notice. The Monte Carlo night planned for April 25 will be Oct. 3.

Sept. 12: Springdale Volunteer Fire Department has rescheduled the May Cash Bash to be Sept. 12. Current tickets will be honored in September and the Progressive 50/50 will be drawn. Please hold on to your tickets. The fire department thanks you for your understanding and support and urges everyone to stay safe.

Sept. 13: The craft and vendor fair is canceled.

Tarentum

West Deer

West Deer Farmers Market is canceled this year.

July 31 and Aug. 1: West Deer Community Days are canceled.
