Vandergrift Library announces summer reading program

The free summer reading program at Vandergrift Public Library will run July 1 to 31 and will be online this year.

The theme will be, “Imagine Your Story,” and encourages the reading of fairy tales, fantasies and myths. The program is for babies, children, teens and adults.

HOPE Center offers free virtual training for medical professionals

The Alle-Kiski HOPE Center will offer free virtual training to medical professionals on how to assist victims of domestic violence.

Clothing Ministry to reopen Wednesday in Freeport

The Thrift Store Clothing Ministry at Freeport United Methodist Church, 211 Fourth St., will be open from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Clothing donations are welcome and must be laundered. Face masks are required to enter the building.

Allegheny Valley Association of Churches Food Bank open Wednesday

The Allegheny Valley Association of Churches Food Bank will be open to anyone in need from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays at 1913 Freeport Road, Natrona Heights, Harrison.

Food will be bagged in advance and placed into vehicles. To make a donation, visit avaoc.org/donate/financial-support/.


Girl Scouts collecting gently used shoes

Oakmont-Verona Girl Scout Troop 52359 is collecting gently used shoes through June 12.

All types of shoes, including sneakers, flip flops, heels and boots will be accepted. No holes in toes, broken heels, mold or mud please.

No-contact drop off locations include:

• 501 12th St., Oakmont, bin on the porch

• 1417 Eaton Drive, Oakmont, covered porch

• 325 Jefferson St., in the East Oakmont section of Plum, front of the garage

Collected shoes are used to support micro-enterprise vendors in developing nations.


Food Truck event planned Wednesday in Apollo

The Wheel Good Wednesday food truck event sponsored by the Apollo Events Committee and Apollo Area Historical Society will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the old Stanford lot on Clifford Avenue.

Vendors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. will be Kona Ice and Funky Monkey Donuts and Frank’s Red Rocket and Kaczor Ravioli Company will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Food truck vendors who wish to participate at a future event should email apolloevents@gmail.com.

Tuesday and Friday: The annual spring cleanup days have been rescheduled to be Tuesday and Friday. Pickup on Tuesday will be for Laneville, Locust Street, Stewart Street, Hickory Way, Buffalo Street, Washington Street, Franklin Street, Mill Street and Second Street Extension. Leechburg

Lower Burrell

Today: Lower Burrell Council will conduct the agenda meeting at 7 p.m. partially by teleconference at city hall, 2800 Bethel St. Public participation through written comments is encouraged and preferred. Written comments should be sent via US Mail or emailed to colb@cityoflowerburrell.com by 4 p.m. Monday. The agenda will be posted on the city website and at the municipal building. Physical presence by the public will be limited and subject to 6-foot physical distancing. Those attending must wear a face mask. Those without issues requiring immediate attention are asked to refrain from physically attending. The public will not be admitted beyond capacity. Tuesday: East Kensington Community Circle will host an Election Day luncheon from 12:30 p.m. till the food runs out at the Community Circle building, Powers Drive. Buffalo Township

Leechburg High School Class of 1953 Reunion planned in June is canceled.

Leechburg High School Class of 1960 Reunion planned for August is postponed until Aug. 7, 2021.

Mondays: The GriefShare group sessions at First Evangelical Lutheran Church are postponed and will be rescheduled.

Lower Burrell

Bethesda Evangelical Lutheran Church: is closed for all activities and services.

New Kensington

Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church has canceled all Sunday services and church activities.

Peoples Library Book Sale is postponed indefinitely.

Oakmont

June 15: The Oakmont 5K is canceled.

June 27 and 28: The annual Greek Food Festival sponsored by Church of the Holy Dormition Church is canceled.

Plum

Plum Community Center is closed and all events canceled. Meals on Wheels will continue as scheduled. Those over 60 who are food insecure or rely on the daily lunch can continue to pick up Congregant Lunch provided by the county on a take-out basis only. Pick-ups will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Lunches must be ordered a day in advance by calling 412-795-2330.

Oakmont

Riverview Community Action Corp. is closed for all activities except home delivered meals. Questions: 412-828-1062

Saxonburg

Sept. 12 and 13: The Saxonburg Festival of the Arts is canceled.

The weekly Mingle on Main events are canceled. Refunds will be sent to vendors who signed up.

Springdale

The annual Springdale Jubilee, parade and fireworks are canceled.

Springdale High School Alumni Association meetings are suspended until further notice. The Monte Carlo night planned for April 25 has been rescheduled to Oct. 3.

Sept. 12: Springdale Volunteer Fire Department has rescheduled the May Cash Bash to be Sept. 12. Current tickets will be honored in September and the Progressive 50/50 will be drawn. Please hold on to your tickets. The fire department thanks you for your understanding and support and urges everyone to stay safe.

Tarentum

July 3: The Summit Hose Independence Day fireworks are canceled.

BridgePoint Church: Activities at the church, including the grief support group, and the children’s food and fun event are canceled. A live stream of the Sunday church service will be on Facebook Live.

Tarentum Eagles is closed.

Tarentum Elks Lodge is closed.

Veterans of Foreign Wars is closed and there will be no Friday night bar bingo.
