Flag Day observances scheduled this week

The public is welcome to attend the following events:

• Leechburg Elks will host a ceremony at 7 p.m. Thursday in the lodge ballroom, 228 Market St. The Kiski Valley Community Band will perform patriotic selections.

• Oakmont Elks will have a celebration at 1 p.m. Saturday at the lodge, 106 Washington Ave. A history of the flag will be presented with a musical procession that includes each flag from the first colonial flag through the 50 Stars and Stripes and all U.S. service flags with their respective service anthems. Refreshments will be served.

• Tarentum Elks will honor the American flag at a ceremony at 1 p.m. Saturday at the lodge, 219 E. Sixth Ave. A light brunch and soft drinks will be served afterward.


AK-Heritage Museum to celebrate photographer Eddie Adams

The Alle-Kiski Valley Historical Society will host a birthday celebration for Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer the late Eddie Adams at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the AK Heritage Museum, 224 E. Seventh Ave., Tarentum.

A native of New Kensington, Adams served as a Marine during the Korean War. Some of Adams’ photographs will be on exhibit and birthday cake will be served.

Thursday: The Allegheny Valley Salvation Army and Community Center in Brackenridge will hand out free grab-and-go lunches from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the center parking lot, 917 Brackenridge Ave. Free grocery items from Walmart and Aldi will be available. Everyone is welcome.

East Vandergrift   

Friday : Our Lady, Queen of Peace Parish is selling tickets for a spring cash lottery raffle. There will be two winners and each will receive $1,000 cash and a $100 gift certificate to Naser’s Foods in Apollo. The winning numbers will be the 1:30 and 7 p.m. June 13 Daily Pick 3 numbers. Friday : A car show will be from 5 to 8 p.m. at Christ the King Parish, 125 Park Lane, as part of the Leechburg 175th anniversary celebration. Check-in will begin at 3 p.m. There will be food, music and a 50-50. Legacy awards will be awarded based on historic Leechburg car dealerships. Cost: $10 in advance; $15, at the gate. Harmar

Thursday: The Thunder Thursdays concert at The Pittsburgh Shrine Center is canceled this week due to the US Open at Oakmont Country Club. Concerts will resume June 19.

Harrison   

Today: Allegheny Valley Hospital Auxiliary will host a Memory Makers memory board sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the hospital cafeteria, 1301 Carlisle St., Natrona Heights. Boards measure 8 x 12 inches and are created from a picture on your phone or a regular photo. Cash, checks and credit cards accepted. Proceeds will benefit auxiliary projects for the hospital.

Wednesday: The Agape Thrift Shop at Grace United Methodist Church, 1333 Freeport Road, will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. Clean clothing in all sizes is needed. No housewares or bedding please. Bring donations on Wednesday or leave them on the front porch. Do not place donations in the blue bins behind the church.

Wednesday: Allegheny Valley Association of Churches Food Bank will be open from 1:30 to 5 p.m. at 1913 Freeport Road, Natrona Heights. Food bank participants can receive food allotments twice per month. Those who are not yet registered should come from 3 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
