Collection to benefit Allegheny Valley Association of Churches

Women of the Alle-Kiski Engaging, a division of the Alle Kiski Strong Chamber of Commerce, is sponsoring a collection of household and personal items through May 31 to benefit Allegheny Valley Association of Churches.

Items needed include paper products, diapers, baby wipes, personal care items, laundry detergent, brooms, mops, buckets and cleaning products as well as working new and used vacuum cleaners.

There are many drop-off locations including:

• MinuteMan Press, 541 Hyde Park Road, suite B, Allegheny Township

• Alle Kiski Strong Chamber, 1525 Freeport Road, Harrison

• State Farm Insurance, 141 Columbia Ave., Vandergrift

• Merle Norman Cosmetics, 301 Corbet St., Tarentum

Webinar to discuss human trafficking

Allegheny Family Network will sponsor a free webinar, “Human Trafficking in Your Neighborhood,” from noon to 1:30 p.m. May 21 online.

Topics will include basic knowledge on recognition, how to protect our children, red flags and awareness. Speakers will include a survivor of human trafficking and retired FBI agents.

Salvation Army free lunch distribution planned Thursday

The Allegheny Valley Salvation Army and Community Center in Brackenridge offers free grab and go lunches from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays in parking lot at the center, 917 Brackenridge Ave.


Community Library open to public

Community Library of Allegheny Valley has reopened to the public.

Services available include browsing, computers, fax machine, copying and printing. Patrons are asked to limit their visit to one hour per day and face masks are required.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Holds can be picked up in the library and by lobby pick up. The local history department is open, but still by appointment. For an appointment, visit alleghenyvalleylibrary.org.


In Our Schools

Community College of Allegheny County

The application deadline for the fall semester of the nursing program at Community College of Allegheny County has been extended to June 3.

To apply, prospective students must submit all applications, transcripts, Test of Essential Skills exam scores and other supporting documents by this deadline. Qualified applicants will be placed into campus/time options based on availability.

June 6: Arnold Volunteer Engine Co. will sponsor a drag queen bingo at 2 p.m. in the Arnold No. 2 Training and Social Hall, 1702 Fifth Ave. Doors open at noon. Wednesday: Allegheny Valley Association of Churches Food Bank will be open to anyone in need from 1:30 to 5 p.m. at 1913 Freeport Road, Natrona Heights. Pull into the center parking lot and food will be placed into your vehicle. Those who are not yet registered should come from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Saturday: Community Library of Allegheny Valley will offer a free gardening program, “Tomatomania,” with garden writer Jessica Damiano at 11 a.m. online at Zoom.us. June 11: St. Joseph High School is conducting a $20,000 Super Raffle. Cost: $100 per ticket. Prizes include a $20,000 grand prize, three $1,000 runner-up prizes. Winner need not be present. May 20: Kiski Township Volunteer Fire Department is accepting orders for a Marianna’s Hoagie and Pizza sale. Orders and payment are due Wednesday. Delivery will be May 20. Hoagies are 14 inches and varieties are Italian, ham and Swiss, turkey, All-American, roast beef, smoked ham and cheddar, traditional, three cheese and ham club.
