Free fishing derby scheduled for Northmoreland Park

A free fishing derby will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at Northmoreland Park, Allegheny Township.

Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. on the lakeside deck of the activity center. First and second place trophies and gift certificates will be awarded for longest trout, longest carp and longest other fish of legal size in both adult and youth divisions. Trophies will also be awarded for the best Catch of the Day in both youth and adult categories. Youth participants who are registered by noon will be entered into the door prize drawing. Adult anglers age 16 and older must display a valid Pennsylvania Fishing License.

The event is sponsored by the Westmoreland County Bureau of Parks and Recreation, Westmoreland County Sportsmen’s League, Penn Rod and Gun Club and Somerset Trust Company.

Apollo Meals on Wheels seeking volunteers

Apollo Area Meals on Wheels is looking for volunteers to help prepare meals and deliver meals to clients.

Hours for kitchen help are 7 to 9 a.m. and drivers 9 to 11 a.m., both Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays. For details, call the office at 724-478-3117.

Buffalo Township

Wednesday: Sarver Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) will meet from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Christ Community Fellowship Church, 160 Singleton Road. The group is a non-denominational faith-based organization where mothers from pregnancy through those with 12th grade children can find community and connection. Childcare and brunch are provided. Freeport

Wednesday: The Thrift Store Clothing Ministry at Freeport United Methodist Church, 211 Fourth St., will have a yard sale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Donations of clothing, shoes and boots welcome; must be laundered and free from smoke and pet hair. Details: 724-295-3095.

Harrison

Wednesday: Becky’s Closet community clothing store at Faith Lutheran Church, 1500 Broadview Blvd., will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Very low-cost clothing available for men, women and children. Donations welcome during these hours. Everyone welcome.

Wednesday: The Agape Thrift Shop at Grace United Methodist Church, 1333 Freeport Road, will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. Clean clothing in all sizes is needed. No housewares or bedding please due to lack of space. Bring donations on Wednesday or leave them on the front porch. Do not place donations in the blue bins behind the church.

Wednesday: Allegheny Valley Association of Churches Food Bank will be open from 1:30 to 5 p.m. at 1913 Freeport Road, Natrona Heights. Food bank participants can receive food allotments twice per month. Those who have not yet registered should come from 3 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Jefferson

Tuesday: Concordia at Cabot sponsors a free monthly caregiver support group at 2 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month in the Lund Care Center private dining room, 134 Marwood Road. Use Entrance 4. Kiski Township  

Tuesday: The diaper pantry at Spring Church Lutheran Church, 3623 Lutheran Church Road, will distribute diapers from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church. Distributions will be the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. Recipients must register in advance. May 18: Kiski Township Volunteer Fire Department will host a spring bingo at 7 p.m. at the firehall, 1037 Route 56. Proceeds will benefit the Back to School Carnival planned for Aug. 24. Doors open at 6 p.m. Cost: $25, includes six regular games that pay $50; three specials that pay $100; and a $1,000 must-go jackpot. The kitchen will be open. May 18: Boy Scout Troop 589 is accepting table reservations for a yard sale set for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Apollo Spring Church Sportsman Club, 1945 Route 56. Setup will be at 7 a.m. Cost: yard sale spaces, $15; vendor and crafters, $25. Spaces are 8-foot wide and do not include a table.
