Golf event to benefit Burrell Education Foundation

Burrell Education Foundation’s 23nd Annual Golf Outing will be June 19 at Hill Crest Country Club in Lower Burrell.

Check-in will be at 8:30 a.m. Fee is $125 per golfer; $475 per foursome; foursome must be paid in full prior to June 10. Entry fee includes golf, cart, breakfast, refreshments and a barbeque dinner.

Sponsorship opportunities are available.

Proceeds benefit the educational, cultural and recreational activities of the Burrell Educational Foundation for students and teachers of the Burrell School District. For details, call Michael Discello at 724-334-1406, ext. 2091.


Free fishing derby scheduled for Northmoreland Park

A free fishing derby will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at Northmoreland Park, Allegheny Township.

Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. on the lakeside deck of the activity center. First and second place trophies and gift certificates will be awarded for longest trout, longest carp and longest other fish of legal size in both adult and youth divisions. A trophy and certificate will also be awarded for the best Catch of the Day in both youth and adult categories. Youth participants will receive a door prize at registration. Adult anglers age 16 and older must display a valid Pennsylvania Fishing License.

The event is sponsored by the Westmoreland County Bureau of Parks and Recreation, Westmoreland County Sportsmen’s League and Dick’s Sporting Goods.


June 3 5k/10k to benefit Freeport Area HS cross country team

The 18th annual Freeport Flash, a 5K/10K race to benefit the Freeport Area High School Cross Country team, will be June 3 on the Butler Freeport Rails to Trails, Buffalo Township.

Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Buffalo Nature Center, 154 Monroe Road and the race will begin at 9 a.m. Registration fee is $25 before June 1 and will be $30 on race day. A virtual option is available.

Today: Alle-Kiski Day Quilters and Sewers will meet from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Allegheny Township municipal building, 136 Community Building Road. Bring your project. No dues or fees. Saturday: Apollo United Presbyterian Church, 401 First St., will offer a story time, craft and small snack for children at 11 a.m. on the front steps of the church, weather permitting. In case of inclement weather, the event will be indoors.

Saturday: The annual May Daze event will be from noon to 4 p.m. in Apollo Plaza. There will be food trucks, vendors and a bounce house. A car show will be at the field at 310 Clifford Ave. Entry fee: $10 per vehicle. Car show proceeds will benefit the Apollo Fireworks Fund. Trophies will be awarded.

Sunday: Apollo Area Historical Society will sponsor a performance of Cindy McShane as Marie Brose Tepe Leonard, aka “French Mary,” at 6:30 p.m. at the WCTU Building, 317 N. Second St. Tepe fought for the Union Army in the Civil War. Donations will be accepted.

May 27: St. James Parish will sponsor a Super Patriotic Bingo at 7 p.m. in the parish activity center, 109 Owens View Drive. Doors open at 5 p.m. Cost: $30, includes bingo supplies, food and drinks. Arnold
