Red Cross to offer free smoke detector installations, safety information

Volunteers from the Red Cross will team up with Pioneer, Summit and Highland hose companies, Eureka Fire Rescue and Rep. Mandy Steele to install free smoke detectors and conduct home fire safety visits by appointment from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 11 in homes in Brackenridge and Tarentum.

Volunteers are needed to assist in the project. No experience is required, and training will be provided. Volunteers younger than 18 will require parental consent. To volunteer, visit tinyurl.com/2f2arpey. For an appointment, call 412-263-5278.

Local cat sanctuary seeking volunteers

Zen Cat Sanctuary, a nonprofit cat shelter in New Kensington, is seeking volunteer help.

People are needed to provide daily care, including feeding, cleaning and socializing, participate in fundraising events and provide administrative support.

May 18: The Outdoor Discovery Center at Crooked Creek will sponsor a Wild About Tea Hike from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the center, 142 Kerr Road. Learn about the history of tea around the world and some common local plants that can be used to make tea. The hike will be about 1.5 miles on easy to moderate trails. Cost: $25.
