Lower Burrell Farmers Market to open for summer

The Lower Burrell Farmers Market will have an opening day celebration from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the market, on Schreiber Street near city hall.

There will be a scavenger hunt through Veterans Park, tin can flower pot painting for children, free food and a basket raffle with gift certificates to local businesses.


Help needed to ready NK garden for summer

Volunteers are needed Saturday to work in the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy flower garden on Tarentum Bridge Road in front of Giant Eagle, New Kensington.

Workers should arrive at 9 a.m., park in the Giant Eagle parking lot and walk up the grassy slope to the garden. Tasks will include planting and mulching the flower bed.

Registration is encouraged, but not required. To register, email Lmmcguire-olzak@paconserve.org.


Hurricane memories wanted

June will mark the 50th anniversary of Hurricane Agnes in Western Pennsylvania.

The Tribune-Review wants your stories of weathering the once-in-a-lifetime flooding that happened when the storm stalled over Pennsylvania in 1972. American Pie concert in Tarentum rescheduled

The American Pie concert scheduled for tonight at the Magnetta Amphitheatre in Riverview Memorial Park, Tarentum, is canceled due to the threat of inclement weather.

The concert has been rescheduled 7 p.m. June 2. The Snack Shack opens at 6 p.m.

Saturday: Real Life Church, 1825 Freeport Road, will host a family game night at 7 p.m. in the church fellowship hall. Bring your game or play one at the church.

Saturday: Arnold United Methodist Church, 1801 Leishman Ave., will host an all-you-can-eat spaghetti and meatball dinner from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the church. Menu: spaghetti, meatballs, salad, bread, cake and beverage. Dine in or takeout. Cost: $9; younger than 12, $6; takeout orders, $10.

Saturday: St. Vladimir Ukrainian Catholic Church will have its final pop-up pierogi sale until September from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in the church social hall, 1610 Kenneth Ave. Varieties: sauerkraut or potato, $11, per frozen dozen. Assorted varieties of frozen pierogi from St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Church, Pittsburgh, will be available for $10 per dozen. Fresh stuffed cabbage will be sold for $3.50 to benefit Ukraine. Quantities are limited. No advance orders will be accepted.

Brackenridge

Today: Bingo will begin at 7:15 p.m. at the American Legion, 845 First Ave.

Gilpin

Today: Gilpin Volunteer Fire Department will host bingo at 7:15 p.m. at the firehall, 113 Firehall Road.

Harrison

Friday: Natrona Heights Veterans of Foreign Wars will have bingo at 7 p.m. at the post, 894 Veterans Lane. Doors open at 6 p.m., and there will be specials, a 50/50 raffle and final game jackpot.

Leechburg 

Today: A New Path Al-Anon Family Group, a free, confidential program for anyone whose life has been affected by someone else’s drinking, will meet at 7 p.m. in First United Methodist Church, 251 Main St. Face masks and social distancing required.

Saturday: Leechburg Museum will open for the season from noon to 3 p.m. Hours will be noon to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Wednesdays.

New Kensington 

Today: The Secular Organization for Sobriety/Save Our Selves (SOS) a support group for people recovering from alcohol and drug abuse, will meet a 7 p.m. at Lost Dreams Awakening Recovery Community Center, 408 Eighth St. Details: 724-556-0737.

Today: New Kensington Eagles Auxiliary Bingo will be at 7 p.m. at the aerie, 2134 Freeport Road. Doors open at 5 p.m. The kitchen will be open. Public welcome. Details: 724-448-7403.

Saturday and Monday: The Community Clothes Closet, 1129 Kenneth Ave., will be closed for Memorial Day weekend. The closet will be open from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 4. Items available include clothing for all members of the family, shoes and linens. First-time customers receive 15 free items. Summer clothing donations accepted during business hours.

Saxonburg 

Today: South Butler Community Library will have a free program about the local history of hotels and boarding houses once located in the Saxonburg area at 6:30 p.m. at the library, 240 W. Springdale

Today: Lower Valley Community Food Bank will distribute food from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday from the rear entrance of the Springdale borough building. Do not arrive before 12:45 p.m. Anyone in need of food who lives in Springdale, Springdale Township, Cheswick, Harmar and the sections of Indiana Township and West Deer with a zip code of 15024 is welcome. New recipients can register Thursday.
