Mayors proclaim today Bells Across America Day

The mayors of Freeport, Lower Burrell and New Kensington have proclaimed today to be Bells Across America Day in their municipalities.

At 7 p.m. all residents and churches are encouraged to ring bells for three minutes.

The three purposes of the initiative include:

• To recognize and honor first responders, health care workers and employees of grocery stores, pharmacies and other life-sustaining businesses who have maintained essential services while at risk of infection from COVID-19.

• To show solidarity with elected officials and residents across Pennsylvania, all of whom are fighting the virus on the frontlines together.

• To demonstrate a collective resolve that Pennsylvanians will prevail over COVID-19 and work tirelessly to ensure that their businesses and civic life will thrive again.

Emergency food available at New Kensington Salvation Army

The Salvation Army in New Kensington is distributing food to residents through its pantry at 1101 Fifth Ave., New Kensington.

Anyone in need should ring the bell to the door by the parking lot from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and food will be given out safely. Appointments are encouraged.

Donations of non-perishable food can be taken to the pantry during the same hours. To make an appointment and for details, call 724-335-7221.

Goodwill centers offer no-contact donation areas

Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania has opened no-contact, self-service donation areas at each of their local stores.

No-contact areas were developed to allow the public to make donations while still observing social distance guidelines and were approved by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

To donate, drive up to a self-service area and place items in the specially marked bins or donations areas. A QR code that can be scanned will be posted at the site to request a donation receipt.

Local locations are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and located at 1306 Pittsburgh St., Cheswick; 4612 William Penn Highway, Murrysville; and 4005 Freeport Road, Natrona Heights, Harrison.

Harrison Township Water Authority has begun to flush water hydrants in the township. The project will take several weeks. May 17: The free Fishing Derby at Northmoreland Park that was planned by the Westmoreland County Bureau of Parks and Recreation is canceled, as are all park facility reservations for April and May.

Apollo

Apollo Area Historical Society museum will remain closed. The April 5 program about trolleys is rescheduled to be at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 2 at the WCTU Building, 317 N. Second St.

Plum

Plum Community Center is closed and all events canceled. Meals on Wheels will continue as scheduled. Those over 60 who are food insecure or rely on the daily lunch can continue to pick up Congregant Lunch provided by the county on a take-out basis only. Pick-ups will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
