Farmers market to begin in New Kensington

The River Community Church, New Kensington, will host a farmers market from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays during summer beginning this week at the church, 200 Freeport Road.

There will food trucks and craft vendors on Friday. Vendor applications are being accepted for future markets. For details, call Nicky at 724-337-4837 or admin@goriverchurch.com.


HOPE Center offers shelter for families and pets

The Alle-Kiski HOPE Center offers a Sheltering Animals and Families Together (SAF-T) Kennel to victims of domestic violence who are fleeing abuse with their pets.

The kennel allows families to bring their pets with them safely to an on-site kennel during their shelter stay.

All services are free and confidential. For information, call the center’s 24-hour hotline at 724-224-1266.


Family movie series to feature, ‘Field of Dreams’

The free Allegheny County Family Drive-in Movie series planned Friday in Boyce Park wave pool parking lot will be, “Field of Dreams,” rated PG.

Gates open at 6 p.m. and the movie starts at dusk. There is a 100-vehicle limit, first-come, first served. Gates will close when the movie starts, or the venue reaches capacity.

Movie audio is played through a radio transmitter on 87.9 FM.


Lower Burrell Meals on Wheels seeking volunteers

Lower Burrell Meals on Wheels is seeking volunteers to help in the kitchen and make deliveries in Arnold, New Kensington and Lower Burrell.

Today: Harrison Commissioners will hold a special meeting at 6 p.m. at the municipal building, Park Avenue and Springhill Road, to consider a kayak parking lot project at 5 Sycamore St. Social distancing and face masks required. Saturday: Community Library of Allegheny Valley will offer a free teen technology show, “TikTok, YouTube and Making Your Own Beats,” at 11 a.m. online at Zoom.us. June 11: St. Joseph High School is conducting a $20,000 Super Raffle. Cost: $100 per ticket. Prizes include a $20,000 grand prize, three $1,000 runner-up prizes. Winner need not be present. Thursday: Knead Community Café in New Kensington will hand out free grab-and-go dinners from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the café, 1011 Barnes St. This week’s meals are sponsored by Westmoreland Community Action. Those picking up meals are reminded to observe social distancing while waiting in line.
