5K Holiday Dash planned Dec. 3 in Vandergrift

Registrations are being accepted for the Vandergrift Back When 5K Holiday Dash set for Dec. 3 in Vandergrift.

This is a timed event for walkers and runners. Prizes will be awarded to the top three males and females overall. Race day registration will be from 8:15 a.m. until the race begins at 9:30 a.m. There will be no prerace packet pick up on Friday. The event begins at 154 Grant Ave., near Bobbie’s Jewelers and the finish line will be at 113 Grant Ave., near Sweetlane Chocolate Shop.

New Kensington invites groups to decorate holiday wreaths

The New Kensington Recreation Commission is seeking local businesses, churches and organizations to decorate holiday wreaths for display in the downtown corridor during the holiday season.

Wreaths are available now at city hall and must be returned by Nov. 18. Decorations should be weather resistant and be secured tightly to the wreath. Wreaths will be judged after the Dec. 3 holiday parade.


Volunteers needed to drive seniors to medical appointments

The Open Your Heart to a Senior program at Wesley Family Services is seeking volunteers to drive senior citizens to their medical appointments.

Scheduling is flexible and training and support is available. Volunteers are needed to serve New Kensington, Arnold, Lower Burrell and Vandergrift. If you enjoy driving and would be willing to take a senior to get their medical care, call 724-205-6282 or email OYHS@wfspa.org


Parades canceled due to inclement weather

Today’s Veterans Day parades in New Kensington/Arnold and Lower Burrell are canceled due to the expected inclement weather.

There will be a service at 12:30 p.m. at the Lower Burrell Veterans of Foreign Wars, Wildlife Lodge Road.

Saturday: A fall craft and vendor show to benefit Highlands High School Marching Band will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the high school cafeteria and gymnasium, Natrona Heights. There will be over 70 vendors, food, a basket raffle and 50/50. Admission: $1.

Saturday: The Diaper Pantry at Christ Our Hope Anglican Church, Harrison, will distribute diapers from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, 926 Painter Ave., and at Sheldon Park, both in Natrona Heights. Recipients must drive up and remain in their vehicles. First-time recipients must provide their own identification, the child’s birth certificate and a current WIC or SNAP card.
