Applications being accepted from veterans for free Christmas groceries

Westmoreland County Marines will provide Christmas groceries to local veterans’ families in need.

To apply, veterans must provide proper identification and proof of military service such as a VA card, DD-214 or the new Pennsylvania drivers license with flag. Requests must be received by Dec. 10.

Pickup will be from 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 20 in the parking lot of the Lower Burrell Community Market located in Hill Crest Shopping Center. Home delivery will not be available this year.

Funds for the project come from local residents and businesses. To make a financial donation, mail a check payable to Westmoreland County Marines, in care of Jim Walters, 176 Hilltop Drive, Lower Burrell PA 15068.


Salvation Army accepting registrations for toy distribution

Allegheny Valley Salvation Army is accepting registrations for its children’s Christmas toy distribution.

Children must be 13 or younger and live in the following zip codes, 15006., 15014. 15030, 15032, 15049, 15065, 15075, 15076, 15084 and 15238.

To register call social worker Victoria at 724-224-6310, ext. 1. Deadline to register is Dec. 7.

Toy donations can be made through Walmart at walmart.com/registry/registryforgood/welcome. Search for Allegheny Valley Salvation Army Treasure for Good.

Sunday: The Alle-Kiski Valley Historical Society Flea-Tique will be from dawn to noon at the Bull Creek Tour-Ed Mine site, off Bull Creek Road. Rain or shine. This will be the last event of the season. No pets permitted. CDC guidelines will be observed. Spaces: $30 per month. Vendors may set up beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday. New Kensington
