Model train display set at Appleby Manor Presbyterian Church

The 31st annual model train display at Appleby Manor Presbyterian Church, 810 Main St., Manor Township, will open Monday and continue through Nov. 26. Hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Nov. 25, including Thanksgiving, and 2 to 6 p.m. Nov. 26.

The exhibit features operating model trains of N, HO, O, 027, S and On30 gauges and large Lego displays. Admission is either canned goods or a monetary donation that will be sent to the Ford City Food Bank.

Apollo Meals on Wheels seeking volunteer help

Apollo Area Meals on Wheels is looking for volunteers to help prepare meals and deliver meals to clients.

Hours for kitchen help are 7 to 9 a.m. and drivers 9 to 11 a.m., both Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays. For details, call the office at 724-478-3117.


Free holiday hams and potatoes to be given away

Allegheny-Kiski Health Foundation and Cook Vandergrift will distribute free hams with potatoes from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Dec 14 at a drive-thru at the Cook facility, 1186 Montgomery Lane, Parks.

Contributions needed for homeless veterans’ stocking project

Local veterans’ charity Five Forces is collecting personal items for the Homeless Heroes Stocking Project.

The Homeless Heroes Stocking Project works with the Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania to supply stockings for Christmas to more than 2,500 homeless veterans in our area.

Items needed include full-size shampoo, deodorant and toothpaste; wash cloths, soap, plastic toothbrush and soap holders, socks, gloves, draw-string backpacks and $10 gift cards to Walmart or Giant Eagle. Donations will be accepted during operating hours at Sports Performance + Spine, 140 Market St., and Hebron Lutheran Church, 201 Main St., both in Leechburg; Little Owls Learning Center, 493 Route 66, Gilpin; and Meyers RV Sales of Pittsburgh, 4616 Route 66, Washington Township.

Springdale   

Saturday: A spaghetti dinner to benefit the medical expenses of Stephen James “Jim” Hvizdos of Springdale will be from 1 to 6 p.m. the Springdale Veterans of Foreign Wars, 1151 Pittsburgh St. Cost: $20 and there will be a cash bar, silent auction, bake sale, DJ and 50/50. An Army veteran, Hvizdos suffers from kidney disease and is awaiting a kidney transplant.
