NK-Arnold School District to celebrate homecoming

The New Kensington-Arnold School District will celebrate homecoming Thursday and Friday with a carnival, parade and football game.

The free carnival will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the high school. Senior fall athletes, band members, cheerleaders and JROTC members will be recognized and there will be a bonfire.

The homecoming parade will begin at 5 p.m. Friday in Arnold and proceed down Fifth Avenue to New Kensington to the high school stadium. Fall sports teams, the homecoming court, band, JROTC, fire trucks and police will participate. The football game will kick off at 7 p.m.

Fire departments offer free smoke detectors, batteries

George G. McMurtry Vandergrift Fire Department No. 1, in partnership with Eveready, will distribute free 9-volt batteries for smoke detectors to residents of Vandergrift and East Vandergrift from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Oct. 25 and 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31 at the firehall, 278 Franklin Ave.

Both Vandergrift fire companies are partnering with the American Red Cross Sound the Alarm project and will install up to three free smoke detectors with 10-year lithium power cell batteries in homes by appointment. Detectors will be installed by firefighters and a review of home fire safety will be done. For details and an appointment, call the station at 724-567-7171 and leave a message.

Free resource fair planned in Harrison

Building Block of Natrona with the Allegheny County Health Department will host a free community vaccine and health screening clinic health from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in Natrona Community Park, 12-20 River Ave., Harrison, rain or shine.

Flu vaccines and covid-19 booster shots and Narcan will be available and there will be giveaways, STD screenings and prevention materials. The park concession stand will be used for medical care and residents can wait their turn under the pavilion or in their vehicles.
