Stocking stuffer items needed for veterans

Vandergrift Veterans of Foreign Wars is collecting items to be placed in Christmas stockings for the veterans at the Mechling-Shakley Veterans Center, Sugarcreek Township, Armstrong County.

Items needed include foot powder, socks, beef sticks, non-alcoholic mouth wash, body wash, caps, travel games, tooth care products, shampoo, gloves and playing cards.

Donations can be taken between noon and 10 p.m. to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 141 Sumner Ave.


Used paper-back books needed for troops, veterans

The Last Word Bookstore, Lower Burrell, is participating in Operation Paperback Book Drive, that collects gently-used paperback books and sends them to American troops overseas, and veterans and military families in the United States.

Books most requested include current affairs, adult fiction, horror, thrillers, true crime, biographies, military history, past war books, travel guides, American and world history, puzzle books, investing, finance, self-help, leadership, management, western fiction and science fiction. No romance books please. Monetary donations are welcome to defray shipping costs.

Books can be taken to from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to the store, 2909 Leechburg Road, or to the Lower Burrell Veterans of Foreign Wars, Wildlife Lodge Road. Volunteers are also needed to collect, pack and ship the books. For details, call Karen at 724-980-1242.

Nov. 24: Kiski Township Volunteer Fire Company is accepting orders for pies and pumpkin rolls from The Pie Shoppe in Laughlintown. Varieties: chocolate meringue, coconut meringue, lemon meringue, apple, Dutch apple, blackberry, wild blueberry, razzleberry, cherry, peach, raisin, harvest and pumpkin pies, and pumpkin rolls, all $10. Kittanning
