NK Salvation Army to offer holiday assistance, coats

The New Kensington Salvation Army is accepting applications in-person by appointment for assistance for holiday food and gifts for children 13 and younger and Project Bundle Up coats for children younger than 18 and seniors 62 and over at the center, 255 Third St., New Kensington.

Appointments will be available from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursdays in September and October. Applications will be accepted on a first-come and most-need basis. Bring identification, proof of household income and expenses and children’s birth certificates. Free big band concert planned Sunday in Apollo

The Gibbons Big Band will present a free concert of big band music at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 214 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Apollo.

The public is welcome.

Local high school bands to compete at Yough festival

The 15^th annual Yough Night band festival will begin at 3:15 p.m. Saturday at Cougar Mountain, 919 Lowber Road, Herminie.

Marching bands from McKeesport, Maplewood, Southmoreland, Deer Lakes, Elizabeth Forward, Fox Chapel Area, Penn Hills, Burrell, Moon, Norwin, Kiski Area, Belle Vernon, Connellsville, Jeannette, Greensburg Salem, Derry, Hempfield and Yough high schools will compete.

There will be basket raffles, a concession stand and candy grams. Admission is $10; senior citizens and students, $5.
