Participants sought for benefit walk

Apollo Area Churches will sponsor the area CROP Walk at 2 p.m. Oct. 4 on the Roaring Run Trail, Kiski Township

Registration will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the trail. Walkers and sponsors are needed for the benefit to help end world hunger.

If you have any questions or for information, contact coordinator Diane Baer at 724-478-1786. In 2019, over $800 from the proceeds was donated back to the Apollo-Ridge Food Bank.

Help available for families struggling due to the covid-19 pandemic

Many families are hurting now due to loss of work and income related to the covid-19 pandemic.

The Allegheny County Department of Human Services Office of Community Services is offering CARES Act funding through a Community Service Block Grant to residents of the county.

Allegheny Valley Association of Churches will help residents submit their application. For details, contact Beth Kendra at 724-226—0606, ext. 10 or beth@avaoc.org.

Knead Community Café accepting donations

Knead Community Café, New Kensington, is accepting donations to help the daily operation of the café, 1011 Barnes St.

Items on the café’s wish list include: antibacterial hand sanitizer and refills, Clorox wipes, disposable latex or nitrile gloves size large or one-size-fits-all, paper towels, white premium napkins, 8x8-inch or 9x9-inch single compartment Styrofoam hinged takeout containers, premium plastic forks and knives and Sam’s Club gift cards.

Donations will be accepted during business hours 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.

Flu shot clinics scheduled at local YMCAs

Valley Points Family YMCA will host flu clinics for adults Oct. 6 at the three local branches.

Times and locations are:

•New Kensington, 800 Constitution Blvd., 9 to 10 a.m.

•Allegheny Valley, 5021 Freeport Road, Natrona Heights, Harrison, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

•Kiski Valley, 511 Hyde Park Road, Allegheny Township, noon to 1 p.m.

Reservations are required. For reservations, visit vpfymca.org or stop in at any branch. Bring your insurance card.

Churches plan virtual ministry for children

Sunday Night Live, an interactive Christian education ministry for children in prekindergarten through sixth grade will be at 6 p.m. the first Sunday of each month beginning Oct. 4 on Zoom.us.

Sponsored by First Lutheran and Hebron Lutheran churches, both in Leechburg and Bethesda Lutheran Church, Lower Burrell, there will be Bible stories, music, crafts and more. The Oct. 4 event will include a blessing of animals and everyone is encouraged to dress up like an animal.

Fall clean-up day planned Oct. 3 in Arnold

A fall clean-up day for residents of Arnold will be from 9 a.m. to 1p.m. Oct. 3 at the Arnold city garage, Drey Street and Third Avenue.

Items that will not be accepted include paint, propane, hazardous materials, building materials, shingles, oils, chemicals, batteries and Freon appliances. Tires will be accepted for $2 each or up. Televisions will be accepted for a donation, cash only.
