Oktoberfest to feature German food, music

Holy Family Parish will host an Oktoberfest from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday in St. Irenaeus Church Hall, 387 Maryland Ave., Oakmont.

There will be German food, beer, games, raffles, children’s games, polka music and dancing. The menu will include German red cabbage slaw, salads, chicken schnitzel, pork schnitzel, spaetzle, carrots, sauerkraut, pumpernickel bread, German desserts and cookies, iced tea, lemonade and coffee.

Used Halloween costume collection underway

Community Library of Allegheny Valley in Harrison is collecting gently used Halloween costumes for a sale planned to begin Oct. 10 at the library, 1522 Broadview Blvd.

Costumes in all sizes for adults, children and even pets can be dropped off during regular operating hours of 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fridays and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

Fox Chapel 

Saturday: Fox Chapel Police Department will host a touch-a-truck from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the borough building, 401 Fox Chapel Road. A sensory friendly hour for children who need a quieter experience will be from 11 a.m. to noon. No horns, sirens or flashing lights will be permitted. A live demonstration by the Fox Chapel Volunteer Fire Department will be at 12:30 p.m. Admission: non-perishable food and monetary donations for the Blawnox Community Food Pantry.

Harmar

Oct. 17: The Highlands School District will sponsor a Change for Cancer night at the varsity football game to raise money for people fighting cancer.
