Donations being accepted for holiday turkey vouchers

Allegheny Valley Association of Churches is accepting donations to help with the food bank turkey voucher distribution.

To contribute, send a check with “Thanksgiving” in the memo to Allegheny Valley Association of Churches, 1913 Freeport Road, Natrona Heights, PA 15065. All donations will be acknowledged.


Entries welcome for annual Tarentum scarecrow contest

Tarentum Recreation Board is sponsoring its 15th annual Scarecrow Contest.

The contest is open to groups, including family, friends, clubs, schools and businesses. There is no entry fee. Scarecrows must be humorous, whimsical and lovable, but not frightening or bloody. All props and scarecrows should stand between 4- and 7-feet tall and be attached with only rope to the black light poles along Corbet Street and Sixth Avenue. Set-up is Oct. 1 to 10. Judging will be at the Oct. 12 Night Market and gift card prizes will be awarded.

Penn State New Kensington to host art exhibit

The works of New Kensington artist Carolyn Haas will be exhibited during the month of October in the art gallery at Penn State New Kensington, Upper Burrell.

The exhibit “Petroglyphics: Stories from the Earth” features the hidden patterns within her collection of rocks.

Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Reservations are recommended. For reservations, call art gallery coordinator Tina Booth at 724-334-6056.
