Trial ordered for West Deer man accused by Harmar police of beating woman unconscious, threatening her with knife
A man accused by Harmar police of beating a woman until she was unconscious and threatening her with a knife when she awoke has been ordered to stand trial.
Anthony Carl McMillan, 28, of the 200 block of Wineberry Drive in West Deer was charged March 22 with a felony count of aggravated assault and counts of making terroristic threats as well as simple assault.
Following his arrest, McMillan was detained in the Allegheny County Jail without bail after a judge ruled he was a danger to the victim and the community, according to court records.
During an appearance Monday before District Judge David Sosovicka, McMillan waived his right to a preliminary hearing and was ordered to stand trial in Allegheny County Court, court records show.
McMillan was released from custody Thursday after a judge set a nonmonetary bond. He is scheduled for formal arraignment May 18.
Police wrote in McMillan’s arrest papers that a Harmar resident reported to police that she was assaulted by him at her home after they attended a party.
She told police she ran upstairs and tried to lock herself in the bathroom after he became angry and flipped over a coffee table, according to a criminal complaint.
McMillan forced open the door and started hitting her in the face, the complaint said. She told police she fell to the ground to try to protect herself and he kicked her repeatedly in the ribs.
The woman said she was able to make it to the bedroom where she passed out.
She told police McMillan was waving a knife when she woke up and said: “I should teach you a lesson,” according to his arrest papers.
Investigators questioned the woman more than 17 hours after the alleged incident occurred; they said her left eye was swollen shut and the right side of her face had multiple bruises.
She also had bruises on her arms, a cut hand and rib pain, the complaint said.
Paramedics transported her by ambulance to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Oakland for treatment.
