When people buy a copy of the Tribune-Review at a McDonald’s restaurant, they’re doing more than buying a newspaper.

Since 2000, the Trib has donated 50% of the revenue from newspaper sales at the restaurants to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Pittsburgh and Morgantown.

The money helps provide an enjoyable place to stay to families traveling to the Pittsburgh area to get medical care.

With the 2020 contribution of $9,770, the total donated from newspaper sales to Ronald McDonald House Charities has topped the $1 million mark.

“This is just an amazing milestone,” said Eleanor Reigel, chief executive officer of RMHC Pittsburgh and Morgantown. “This campaign has brought so much comfort to families in need over the last two decades.”

The Ronald McDonald Houses help create the comforts of home for families traveling with their sick children so they can focus on their child’s well-being. The families not only have a place to stay but are also provided with meals and laundry services as well as support from others in similar situations.

McDonald’s has been leading this effort for more than 40 years.

“We are so proud that through this ongoing partnership we can support the work of Ronald McDonald House Charities and help provide a home away from home for the families they serve,” said Jennifer Bertetto, Trib Total Media president and CEO.

Trib Total Media Marketing Director Lindsay Bock said the company values its longstanding relationship with local McDonald’s franchisees and store owners and Ronald McDonald House Charities.

“This program was just a small way we could all work together to support families through Ronald McDonald House Charities,” Bock said. “And, it goes to show that a little can go a long way — $1 million over 20 years, one newspaper at a time.”
