Pittsburgh-based Arconic Technology Center is bringing enhanced international technology to its metal manufacturing company.

Arconic and Icelandic metal analysis company DTE are expanding their collaboration, which began last October.

An Arconic facility in North America will serve as a pilot location for DTE’s molten metal composition analysis system.

That location, while not disclosed publicly, is reported to be Arconic’s technology center in Upper Burrell.

The technology promises to increase efficiency of their products, which includes sheets, plates and extrusions that are used to build cars, trucks, airplane parts and building facades.

The technology provides real-time analysis of molten metal to streamline the production process.

After the pilot program, Arconic will evaluate if and how they can use the technology at their other locations.

DTE was not at liberty to disclose what Arconic location will house the pilot program, and Arconic declined to provide the location.

But, as reported in Aluminum International Today, the project will be coordinated at Arconic’s technology center in Upper Burrell.

“We are excited to launch this strategic collaboration with Arconic, a leader in the global aluminum industry,” said Jakob Ásmundsson, CEO of DTE. “Looking ahead, we expect our technology to play a key role in boosting throughout and optimizing scrap utilization — delivering meaningful reductions in carbon footprint while driving profitability.”

Arconic, is a spinoff from Alcoa, which was founded in New Kensington. In 2016 Alcoa split, with Alcoa retaining the aluminum mining and smelting operations and Arconic taking over the engineering aspects of the company.

In 2020, Arconic split to create Howmet Aerospace, with Arconic retaining control of flat rolled aluminum products.

Their headquarters is now based in Pittsburgh with various sites across the U.S., including Tennessee, Iowa, Michigan and California.

A portion of the company’s technology center in Upper Burrell is set to become a data center.

“At Arconic, we are constantly exploring cutting-edge solutions to enhance manufacturing efficiency and product quality,” said Shawn Sullivan, managing director of Arconic Technology Center.

“DTE’s real-time molten metal analysis capabilities present a significant opportunity to increase manufacturing efficiency and product quality while optimizing the utilization of scrap and recycled materials.”
