Vape sensors will be installed in restrooms and common areas at Valley Jr.-Sr. High School in New Kensington.

The New Kensington-Arnold school board this week approved buying and installing vape sensors at Valley at a one-time cost of $12,800, said Superintendent Chris Sefcheck.

There is an ongoing annual maintenance fee of $1,700.

Sefcheck said the move is another way to use technology to keep students safe.

“We’re trying to be proactive and reduce the possibility of it happening and continue our effort to improve student behavior,” Sefcheck said.

Locally, area high schools with vape detectors include Burrell, Highlands, Plum, Riverview and Franklin Regional.

E-cigarettes or vapes are the most commonly used tobacco product among American youth, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2024, 1.63 million high and middle school students nationwide reported using e-cigarettes or vapes, according to the CDC.

“Vaping is an issue with kids,” Sefcheck said. “We want to stay on top of it and prevent them from getting the idea of doing it.”
